Big Third Quarter Allows RPI to Gain Comeback Win Over Clarkson

Troy, NY – On the wrong end of a 7-0 third quarter, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team did not have quite enough to complete a fourth-quarter comeback as the Golden Knights dropped a 14-11 decision to Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers improved to 6-6 and 3-1. Clarkson will host RIT next weekend at Hantz Field.

Although Angelo Venuto won the opening faceoff and raced down the field for a quick 1-0 RPI lead, it was the Golden Knights that would control most of the first half. After the Engineers' opening score, Clarkson rattled off seven straight goals in a stretch of less than 18 minutes. Thomas Fiebich scored the first two to put the Knights ahead and then five different goal scorers helped Clarkson roll out to a 7-1 lead midway through the second quarter. Two more scores a few minutes later from Sebastian Geiger and Alex Seiler had the Knights up 9-2, and looking to cruise to an easy win. However, RPI scored three goals in the final four minutes of the quarter to get things closer at the half.

Early in the third, Cooper Manzi scored to put the score at 9-6, but the real switch in momentum came when the Engineers were able to score three straight goals while up a man, tying the game 9-9 by the 11:23 mark in the period. Three more goals over the final 10-plus minutes, including one with six seconds left on the clock, gave RPI a 12-9 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Clarkson twice drew within two following goals from Tyler Hall and Sebastian Geiger, but each team the Engineers had an answer to keep the Knights from reclaiming the momentum.

Sebastian Geiger scored five points on three goals and two assists to lead the Knights' offense. Christian Canino scored three points with a goal and two assists, Thomas Fiebich scored twice, and Alex Seiler had a goal and one assist. Patrick Sanna snagged seven groundballs and caused two turnovers. Logan Wilkinson also caused three turnovers and had three groundballs.

For RPI, Anthony Mazzella scored four times and Zach Swanson produced two goals and two assists. Cooper Manzi also tossed in three points and five groundballs, and Luke Murphy scored three goals. Angelo Venuto won 22 of his 26 tries on faceoffs and also picked up 15 groundballs.

RPI held the advantage in shots (52-38), shots on goal (30-21), groundballs (43-29), and faceoffs (22-4). Joseph Perry made 10 saves in the crease for RPI while Jacob Mattice (6) and Griffin Emerson (10) combined for 16 saves for the Knights.
