Knights Fall to Third-Ranked RIT, 15-8

Potsdam, NY – A fast start and a strong finish by third-ranked RIT sent the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team to defeat on Saturday, as the Golden Knights dropped a 15-8 Liberty League decision to the Tigers at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 9-3 overall and 1-3 in conference games, while the Tigers improved to 13-1 and 5-0 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will likely need to win out in its three final conference games to hope to reach the league tournament.

RIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead with some quick scores in the first two minutes of the game, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout to regroup. The Golden Knights settled in after that and kept things close by exchanging scores with the Tigers for the next 25 minutes, coming back to within two only to fall behind by three on several occasions.

By the end of the third quarter, Clarkson was still within striking distance when Tyler Hall scored with 3:12 remaining, putting the Knights down by three (11-8). However, RIT would score four times in the fourth and the Clarkson would go scoreless in the final quarter. Clarkson was held to six shots in the final 15 minutes, with just one going on the cage as the Tigers slowly gave themselves a larger buffer zone in the waning minutes.

RIT finished with a 46-37 edge in shots (29-17) and also had advantages in groundballs (38-29) and faceoffs (15-12). Jacob Mattice made 14 saves in the Clarkson crease, while his counterpart from RIT, Will Sterrett, denied nine shots for the Tigers.

Alex Seiler led Clarkson's offense with three points, scoring a goal and two assists, and Sebastian Geiger netted a goal and an assist. Bryan Penney also scored twice in the contest. Geiger and Mattice each had four groundballs, while Patrick Sanna and Logan Wilkinson also had three groundballs apiece.

For RIT, Luke Pilcher had six points (2-4-6) as did Spencer Bell (4-2-6). TJ Hendricks also scored four times and Chase Bruno contributed three points on two goals and one helper. Sean Traynor led the Tigers with five groundballs, Joe Camp added four groundballs, and Taylor Jensen tossed in three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
