Clarkson Defense Rises Again in 19-7 Win Over Oswego State

Potsdam, NY – Both the offense and defense were clicking in the cold on Tuesday as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team picked up its third win in seven days, claiming a 19-7 victory over Oswego State at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 on the season while the Lakers fell to 0-1 in their season-opener. Clarkson will head to Florida for a pair of games next week, where the team will take on North Central (IL) and Keene State.

Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard in each of the first three quarters, as Connor Matthews tallied just 28 seconds in to give the Golden Knights a lead they would never relinquish. The Green and Gold tallied five goals in each of the first two periods to take a 10-1 lead at the half, but the more impressive part of the game was the limitations to Oswego's offense. Clarkson took 34 shots in the first 30 minutes of the game, but allowed the Lakers to take only five in that time while forcing Oswego into 15 turnovers.

Matthews scored just seven seconds into the third quarter on a pass from Thomas Fiebich, but Oswego got a little momentum going its way with back-to-back goals from Corey O'Connor and Jack Delaney just 65 seconds apart. That would be it for the Lakers in the period, however, as Clarkson's defense clamped down and the Knights earned most of the possessions off faceoffs. The Lakers would get back within eight goals midway through the fourth quarter, but the Knights went on a late run to put the game away.

Matthew Hansen and Logan Wilkinson each went 10-for-13 on faceoffs for the Knights, with Wilkinson winning nine groundballs and Hansen picking up five. Other top highlights on defense came from Patrick Sanna, who caused four turnovers and had five groundballs, and Steve Kay, who also forced three turnovers. Offensively for the Knights, Matthews and Fiebich each had six points, as Matthews scored six goals and Fiebich assisted on six. Andrew Kearney and Joe Kelly each had four points with two goals and two assists, and Matt Reilly added two goals and an assist.

For Oswego, Gavin Elston scored three points on two goals and an assist, while five others scored one goal.

Clarkson finished with a 56-21 edge in shots, a 39-11 lead in shots on goal, a 33-17 advantage in groundballs, and a 21-9 margin in faceoffs. Jacob Mattice played the first 45 minutes for Clarkson and made three saves to pick up the win. For Oswego, Aiden Kenyon played roughly 55 minutes and stopped 19 shots.
