Knights Remain Unbeaten with 12-6 Win Over North Central

Davenport, FL – After allowing three goals in the first 12 minutes against North Central, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team locked down defensively and pulled away late for a 12-6 victory at the Northeast Regional Park.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 4-0 while the Cardinals saw their mark evened at 2-2. Clarkson gets a few days off before facing Keene State on Wednesday.

Goals by North Central's Tom Eberhardt and Nick Rubino in the first four minutes of Sunday's contest put Clarkson in a multiple-goal deficit for the first time this year, but early in the second quarter the Knights had tied things up. When Connor Matthews and Matt Reilly connected for a score at the 5:47 mark in the second period, Clarkson had its first lead and never trailed again.

Although North Central would get back within one early in the third, the Cardinals offense remained muted for the rest of the quarter and most of the game. After a man-up goal just 12 seconds into the fourth put the tally at 7-5, Clarkson went on a 4-0 run in a stretch of just five minutes, with Steve Kay, Matthews, Bryan Penney, and Thomas Fiebich each scoring to give the Knights an 11-5 edge and enough of a cushion to hold on down the stretch.

Bryan Penney scored four goals and Matt Reilly produced four points with a goal and three assists. Thomas Fiebich scored three points with a goal and two helpers and both Matthews and Sam Mancabelli scored twice. Matthew Hansen went 15-for-19 on faceoffs and scooped up 10 groundballs for Clarkson, and Matt Szwagulinski caused three turnovers and added three groundballs.

For North Central, Jack Moran scored four points on three goals and an assist and Tom Eberhardt added two goals and four groundballs. Nick Rubino also produced five groundballs and one goal.

Clarkson finished with a 46-27 advantage in shots (24-14 shots on goal) and the Golden Knights won 17 of 21 faceoffs to help build a 40-26 lead in groundballs. Jacob Mattice made eight saves in 56-plus minutes before being relieved by Griffin Emerson, who did not face a shot on goal in the final 210 seconds of the contest. For North Central, Jake Allgood denied 12 shots in the crease.
