Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall For First Time in 2023, 11-8 at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – For the first time in 2023, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team's offense was held to single digits, and Ithaca College did just enough in the second half to outlast the Golden Knights 11-8 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights suffered their first defeat of the season and dropped to 7-1 overall and 0-1 while Ithaca edged up to 4-1 and 1-0. Clarkson takes on SUNY Potsdam next Tuesday evening.

Bryan Penney opened the scoring in the first period, just two minutes into the contest, registering the 100th point of his collegiate career. Things were quiet until the final six minutes of the quarter when each team scored twice. The second quarter was also evenly played as both teams scored three goals. The Knights twice enjoyed two-goal leads, but Ithaca tallied twice in the final two minutes to tie the game at the half.

Penney scored early in the third quarter, but the Knights' offense would be held in check for the next 25 minutes. Ithaca took advantage of Clarkson's offensive drought, scoring a man-up goal midway through the period and then getting a late goal from Jake Erickson with just two seconds remaining in the period.

Ithaca controlled possession in the fourth quarter, making it difficult for Clarkson to chip away at the small deficit. Two goals midway through the period made the score 11-7, and despite a late goal from Sam Mancabelli, the Golden Knights could not complete the comeback.

Ithaca outshot the Knights 37-24, though the shots on goal were much closer at 20-17. Clarkson dominated faceoffs in the first half (11-3), but won just once in the second half and ended the game with a 12-11 advantage in that category.

Penney finished the game with four goals and Mancabelli added a goal and an assist. Tyler Hall, Christian Canino, and Tyler Hall each added a goal. Penney also produced four groundballs and a caused turnover. Jacob Mattice made nine saves for the Knights.

For Ithaca, John Sramac scored four goals while Jake Erickson, Charlie Niebuhr, and Drew Turner each chipped in two points. Hunter Wallace scooped up six groundballs and caused five turnovers. Ryan LaForty made nine saves for the Bombers.
