Another Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Knights Past Potsdam, 7-5

Potsdam, NY – Goals were at a premium on Tuesday evening as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team used a modest burst in the second half to claim a 7-5 victory over SUNY Potsdam in non-conference action.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-1 on the season, extending their winning streak in non-league games to 17 straight. Potsdam fell to 5-3 on the year. Clarkson will be back at home against sixth-ranked Union College on Saturday.

Clarkson got on top early in the first, but Potsdam knocked off three straight goals in a stretch of seven minutes over the course of the late first and early second quarters. Thomas Fiebich scored late in the half to end a 22-minute scoreless drought, pulling the Knights within one, 3-2, at the break.

The second half saw the Knights' defense clamp down even further than in the first, allowing just a pair of goals to the Bears. Potsdam led 4-3 with nine minutes remaining in the third on a Cobie Cree goal, but Connor Matthews found Vincent Lavarnway at the 5:30 mark in the third to tie the game. The Knights would never trail again, as Matthew connected with Thomas Fiebich at 1:50 in the same period. Unassisted goals from Logan Wilkinson and Tyler Hall helped secure the victory in the fourth quarter.

Fiebich led Clarkson's offense with three points on two goals and an assist. Clarkson's defense shined, as Matt Szwagulinski recorded seven groundballs and two caused turnovers and Mason Volley added three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Jacob Mattice stopped 13 shots in just under 59 minutes of play. For Potsdam, Saka Thompson made 18 saves in a strong effort in the Bears' crease.

Clarkson outshot the Bears 44-35 (25-18 in shots on goal). The two teams were close to even in groundballs (Potsdam, 36, Clarkson 33) while the Knights won 11 of 15 faceoffs. The seven goals for the Knights were their fewest in a victory since March 2018, when Clarkson beat Skidmore 6-5.
