Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Fall 1-0 to Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Despite solid chances by both teams sprinkled throughout the game, an own goal proved the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team suffered a tough-luck loss to Vassar College, 1-0, in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-4-2 overall and 2-4-0 in conference games, while Vassar edged up to 8-3-2 and 2-1-2. Clarkson has three games remaining in the Liberty League, but the team's next contest is at crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday evening.

Clarkson had the better chances in the first half, as numerous shots sailed just wide or a few feet above the crossbar. Vassar had the first shot on goal in the 18th minute, but the angle for Olivia Lavelle proved no challenge for Ava Pushor, who caught the shot cleanly without moving off the post.

Vassar's goal came on an unlikely offensive play. The Brewers reversed field and had the ball outside of the penalty area with just a little traffic in front. Noelle Namba played a ball into the six that could have been either a soft shot or a cross, but it didn't have much pace on it. The clearing header attempt ended up going backwards as Molly DiCaprio was coming out to meet the initial attempt and it floated over top of her head and into the back of the net in the 64th minute.

All four of the shots on goal by the Knights came after the Vassar goal. The best opportunity likely was on a direct kick just outside the penalty area after Chloe Hodge was fouled at the top of the box. Julia Tylar was selected for the restart, and she chose to take a hard shot on the Vassar frame. Her sharp grounder ended up getting smothered by Vassar goalkeeper Teresa Zimmer, as she would not allow a rebound after diving to her left.

Clarkson finished with a 10-9 edge in shots, though shots on goal were tied at 4-4. The Knights also led in corner kick opportunities, 5-4. Ava Pushor got the start and made one save in just under 20 minutes of game time, while Molly DiCaprio stopped three shots over the final 70 minutes for the Knights. Teresa Zimmer picked up four saves to earn the shutout for the Brewers.
