Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Rout Potsdam in Midweek Clash, 6-0

Coming up empty on its first 13 shots in the opening half, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team got a late score on a penalty kick and then used that momentum to blow the game open early in the second half with five additional goals as the Golden Knights cruised past SUNY Potsdam 6-0 in a non-league game Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-4-2 overall while Potsdam dropped to 3-8-2 on the year. Clarkson has three conference games remaining, beginning with Rensselaer this Saturday.

In 35 previous games, the record for goals scored by Clarkson against Potsdam was five (2005). In fact, only twice had the two teams ever combined for six goals (1991, 1995).

The ball stayed in the Potsdam defensive end for the first seven minutes before the Bears were able to string passes together to finally possess the ball in the Clarkson end for a few moments before the Knights regained control. Arin Bates, Rylee Marin, and Chloe Hodge each had shots that just missed in the opening half, but it was a foul that led to the first Knights' goal. Bates was able to get possession on the right side and with two moves was past her defender, where she was taken down from behind just a few steps into the box. Chloe Hodge took the penalty kick for the Knights, ripping a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in with just 12.2 seconds left in the half.

Following the break, the momentum stayed with Clarkson as the Knights finished with 22 shots in the second half, including five goals and several near misses that were just high or clanged off the crossbar. Brooke Everest's header bounced off the crossbar in the seventh minute of the second half, but the rebound found the foot of Rylee Marin, who easily hit the ball into the net off a scrum at 51:57. The Knights scored only 27 seconds later when Lillian Gillette hit a hard shot in after the ball was blocked from another Clarkson scoring attempt. Just five minutes later, the onslaught continued as Rylee Marin was taken down in the box near the penalty stripe. Bates was rewarded for her earlier moves with the penalty kick, and she converted at 57:39.

A relative lull came over the next 15 minutes, though the Knights continued to have scoring chances. Another blocked shot found its way to the foot of Emily Davis just a step or two outside the penalty area, and her hard grounder snuck inside the post at 73:08. Six minutes later, Clarkson found the back of the net again, this time off a cross from Emma Robinson. Tonia Kousmanidis just missed connecting with the pass, but Haley Archambault was on the other side and able to knock it in at 79:17.

Clarkson overwhelmed Potsdam in shots, 36-2, and the two attempts for the Bears were mishits that went well wide and never truly put a scare into the Golden Knights' defense. The Green and Gold has a 19-0 edge in shots on goal, which didn't include several shots that were off the crossbar, and Clarkson also led in corner kick chances 4-1. Molly DiCaprio and Ava Pushor combined for the shutout without being called upon to make a save, with DiCaprio playing the first 60 minutes and Pushor competing for the final 30. Savannah Bowie was busy, making 13 saves in the contest.
