Knights Topple 10th-Ranked Rensselaer, 11-8

Potsdam, NY – In the midst of a four-game run against teams ranked in the top-15 in the country, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse broke a third-quarter deadlock against Rensselaer and held on for an 11-8 win over the Engineers in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights got a much-needed conference victory, improving to 10-2 overall and 1-2 in Liberty League contests, while the Engineers suffered their first conference defeat, dropping to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in conference games.

For the first two-and-a-half quarters, neither team enjoyed more than a one goal lead, though the Knights did head into the locker room at the half up 5-4. However, Luke Murphy scored in the first minute of the third quarter to tie the game for the fifth, and what proved to be the final, time. Midway through the period, Sebastian Geiger found Brad Wiley to put Clarkson back on top, and goals from Matt Reilly and Sebastian Geiger in the final four minutes gave the Knights an 8-6 lead through 45 minutes.

Andrew Kearney scored the game-winning goal early on in the fourth quarter, but the Knights still had to battle for the final 10 minutes to clinch the win. Rhys Zoldi scored at 9:24 to pull RPI back within two, but a goal from team-leader Sebastian Geiger and an unlikely source in Connor Borchardt, gave the Knights some key insurance goals late, with the latter sending the bench into a frenzy as Borchardt, a defender, tallied just his second goal of the season.

Clarkson out shot RPI 54-34, but the tally was closer in terms of shots on goal (26-21). The two teams were tied in groundballs (25-25) but the Knights won the battle on face-offs, 14-9. Jacob Mattice made 13 saves in the crease for Clarkson, while Joseph Perry made 15 saves for the Engineers.

Geiger led the Knights on offense with four points, scoring three times and assisting on another goal while also causing two turnovers. Christian Canino scored twice, Thomas Fiebich assisted on two goals, and Tyler Hall had a goal and an assist. Matthew Hansen went 14-for-23 on face-offs and had 10 groundballs and Matt Szwagulinski recorded three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

For RPI, the offense was fairly balanced as Luke Murphy scored three points on two goals and an assist and Rhys Zoldi (2-0-2) and Connor Glosner (1-1-2) also had multi-point games.  Angelo Venuto won 8 of 19 face-offs and had four groundballs and Garrett Volley had three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
