Knights On Wrong End of 8-0 Third Quarter in Loss at RIT

Rochester, NY – Hanging with a top-five team for the first half, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team suffered through a rough third quarter against number-three RIT, as the Golden Knights dropped a 16-6 Liberty League decision on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, receiving votes in the latest poll, fell to 10-3 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, while RIT, ranked third in the country, improved to 12-1 and 4-1. Clarkson takes on another top-20 foes on Tuesday when it hosts St. Lawrence University.

Clarkson led briefly at the start of Saturday's contest as Matt Reilly scored off a pass from Bryan Penney in the first two minutes, but RIT tied the game two minutes later and took the lead at 10:45. The Golden Knights stayed with the Tigers for most of the first quarter, falling behind by two late on a man-up goal, and the game remained close in the second quarter thanks to a scoring drought from both teams. RIT tallied twice in the first five minutes against Clarkson's one score in that same time, but each team was held in check for the final 10 minutes of the first half.

The third quarter swung the game wildly in RIT's favor, as the Tigers scored eight goals thanks to a 21-4 shot advantage, a considerable difference from the first half when Clarkson held a narrow 18-17 lead over the first 30 minutes. Clarkson ended a 28-minute scoreless run with a man-up goal from KJ Sarni in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, and the Knights scored two more times in the first three minutes of the period, but the Green and Gold ended the game without another score over the final 12 minutes to fall short against the Tigers.

RIT finished with a 46-33 lead in shots and a 26-19 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers also had a small lead in groundballs (39-30) while the battle of face-offs was essentially even as RIT won 13 and Clarkson won 12.

Matt Reilly led the Golden Knights with three goals and Bryan Penney added a goal and an assist. Both Andrew Kearney and KJ Sarni scored a goal, and Thomas Fiebich assisted on one score. Matthew Hansen won 11 face-offs and had six groundballs and Connor Borchardt was busy on the defensive end with a caused turnover and six groundballs. Jacob Mattice made 10 saves in the contest.

RIT had a balanced offensive attack with 11 different goal scorers and 15 different players registering at least one point. Marley Angus led the way with four goals and Mike Grace had three points thanks to two goals and an assist.
