Knights Drop 8-3 Decision to Muhlenberg

Auburndale, FL – A five-run bottom of the first put the Clarkson University Baseball team in an early hole from which it could never recover, as the Golden Knights dropped an 8-3 decision to Muhlenberg College on Tuesday morning at the Lake Myrtle Baseball Complex.

The Golden Knight saw their record fall to 2-3 on the young season while the Mules improved to 8-2. Clarkson will continue its run of single nine-inning contests in Florida tomorrow when the team faces Simpson College at 2:00 pm.

Clarkson picked up a run in its first at bat, the fourth time in five games that the Knights have scored in the opening frame. With one out, Kent Wilson began the rally with a single and then advanced to second on another single from Colby Brouillette. After another out put the rally in danger, Sean Eddington singled to plate Wilson and put the Knights up 1-0.

The Mules responded with five in the bottom half of the first, as two came around on a throwing error on an attempted double play. Muhlenberg took advantage, scoring another run on a single from Jake Swerdloff and two more on a hit by Ryan Gilbert.

Clarkson would be quiet offensively until the fifth when Colby Brouillette doubled in Wilson to put the score at 5-2, but Swerdloff doubled in a pair in the seventh for a 7-2 margin. The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth as Robert Fratangelo singled in Kyle Locklear with two outs and the Mules tallied the final run on a sacrifice fly.

Tommy Bianchi was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, Brouillette was 2-for-4 with a RBI, and Wilson went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Clarkson offense. Derrick Lewis struck out six of the 10 batters he faced during 2.1 innings of relief and Griffin Tubbs tossed the final five frames to help save the Knights' bullpen for the coming days, giving up seven hits and whiffing three.
