Virginia Beach, VA – Each of Friday's matches for the Clarkson University Volleyball team saw one of its sets go to extra points, but the Golden Knights finished on the short end of those games, as the Green and Gold dropped two to Mary Washington (25-20, 30-28, 25-15) and Virginia Wesleyan (14-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-19).

The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 on the season and will look to regroup on Saturday against Illinois Wesleyan and Christopher Newport.

Against Mary Washington, the Golden Knights led by as many as five points in the first and third sets, but the team was unable to hold either advantage. In the opener, Clarkson and the Eagles tied nine times and were even knotted up at 19-19, but five attack errors down the stretch by the Golden Knights allowed Mary Washington to claim the set. In the second set, the Eagles rattled off 10 of 11 points in the early going to gain a six-point advantage, a margin that would be maintained until late in the set (20-14). However, Clarkson came back with a 7-1 run to tie the set at 21-21. The two teams exchanged points over the next few minutes as the set went into extra points, where Clarkson would have three set-points, but a kill and a block ended the game in the Eagles favor.

In the third set against Mary Washington, Clarkson again rushed out to a five-point lead (9-4), but the advantage evaporated as again the Knights struggled on offense, watching a 14-11 lead become an 18-14 deficit on five errors. The momentum altered, Mary Washington cruised to a 25-15 win in the third set.

Junior Kristin Werdine had seven kills and sophomore Sara Galante posted seven kills to lead the Clarkson offense. Isabelle Crow recorded 21 assists and Celestial Barrera-Lopez notched 15 digs for the Knights.

In the second match of the day for the Knights, Clarkson rolled to an easy win in the first set thanks to a solid run from Sara Galante (4-0-9) and an impressive all-around performance from Isabelle Crow (eight assists, six digs, two aces) as Clarkson took advantage of some struggles by Virginia Wesleyan (four service errors, three reception errors). The next two sets saw the Marlins settle in, and both teams' offensive games hummed along with the scoreboard seesawing back and forth. The second game, Virginia Wesleyan capitalized on eight Golden Knight errors on the attack to win 25-21. The third set proved to be the tipping point for the Marlins, as a close battle throughout ended up in the home team's favor. Virginia Wesleyan led by three late, only to see the margin disappear thanks to kills from Galante, Megan McEwen, and block assists from McEwen and Kristen Liu. Although the game went to extra points, the Marlins picked up two straight kills late to win 27-25.

The third set proved pivotal as Clarkson found itself on the wrong side of the shift in momentum as Virginia Wesleyan won 10 of the first 14 points and 13 of the first 20. Clarkson chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within two (18-16) after kills from Gillian Kurtic and Galante, but the Marlins halted Clarkson's 8-2 run with three kills in the final four points of the game for the win.

Galante had 11 kills and McEwen hit .391 (10-1-23) to lead Clarkson on offense. Kurtic recorded nine kills with a pair of blocks and was dominant from the service line with seven aces. Emma Baxter and Celestial Barrera-Lopez each produced 18 digs on defense, while Crow had 33 assists and 12 digs and Kristin Werdine picked up 14 digs.
