Clarkson Starts Season with Four-Set Win at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Three players finished in double figures in kills as the Clarkson University Volleyball team opened up its season with a 3-1 victory (25-12, 25-12, 20-25, 25-18) over SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Hall on Wednesday night.

The Golden Knights, 1-0 and ranked 26th in the opening AVCA Coaches Poll, head to Virginia for four matches this weekend at Virginia Wesleyan and Christopher Newport.

Clarkson was dominant in the first two sets, cruising to double-figure victories in each. The Knights led 11-6 in the early going, and a 5-0 run thanks to a pair of Sara Galante kills gave the Green and Gold a 10-point advantage at the midway point. Clarkson's lead would only shrink to nine in the set as the team had no trouble closing out the Bears. The second set was much the same, as a 5-0 run start turned into a 13-4 lead when Emma Baxter produced an ace. Again, Clarkson would lead by at least eight for the rest of the set.

The third set saw Clarkson suffer a hiccup on offense, as the Bears didn't so much beat the Knights as the team beat themselves. Clarkson hit negative in the set with just nine kills 14 hitting miscues, most unforced errors. However, Clarkson recovered in the fourth and again was on its way to an easy win, up by nine late (22-13). Potsdam rallied with five straight points to make things interesting, but a kill and ace by Gillian Kurtic pushed the Knights to their match point, and a solo block by Megan McEwen closed things out.

Gillian Kurtic and Sara Galante each recorded 11 kills to lead the Knights, with Kurtic also picking up four aces and five total blocks (three solo blocks, two block assists). Allyson Treichel also notched 10 kills in the win. Isabelle Crow ran the offense to the tune of 34 assists and also picked up 16 digs. Abigail Spector (18 digs), Celestial Barrera-Lopez (16 digs), and Emma Baxter (10 digs) also reached doubles figures on defense, with both Spector and Baxter accounting for three aces as well. Overall, the Knights produced 13 service aces.

For Potsdam, Jessica Ader had eight kills and 13 digs and Colleen Murphy produced 12 assists. Nikki Ramirez also had 16 digs for the Bears.
