Stone Scores Six in Knights 19-9 Win Over Union

Potsdam, NY – With a six-goal run early in the first half and a five-goal run midway through the second half, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team put together long-term streaks of offensive effectiveness in its 19-9 Liberty League win over Union College on Friday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights evened their records at 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, while Union fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference games. The two teams will close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon with a league playoff berth likely on the line.

Union scored in the first three minutes of the contest, but for the next eight minutes everything went Clarkson's way, as the Knights scored five times in a stretch of just three minutes and 11 seconds to take a 5-1 lead. Midway through the half, Union scored what could have been a key goal by tallying while a player down, but Julia Lavarnway scored late in the penalty to put the Knights back up by five, 7-2. The two teams exchanged mini-runs for the rest of the half, but Clarkson closed out the first 30 minutes with a five-goal advantage.

The second half saw Clarkson score three times early, with two coming from Sydney Roderick, but the deciding run came midway through the half. Kyrsten Stone scored at 19:31 when the Knights were up a player after a Union penalty, and Katie Sergeant, Sofie Mangio, Stone, and Roderick kept the clock rolling as Clarkson gained a 10-goal margin. Union scored twice in the final five-plus minutes, but there wasn't enough time to put together a meaningful comeback.

Stone finished with six goals and six groundballs to lead the Knights, while Roderick had five points on three goals and two assists and Madelynn Barnum added five points thanks to four goals and an assist, adding in six draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sarah Duhaime and Rylee Ganter led the Clarkson defense by causing four and three turnovers, respectively, and both Roderick and Natalie Farnett added three groundballs.

Clarkson finished with significant advantages in shots (46-18), shots on goal (29-11), and groundballs (26-12) while forcing Union to commit 22 turnovers in the contest.
