Union Upends Knights in Regular-Season Finale, 19-13

Schenectady, NY – A day after putting up 19 goals against Union, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team had the trick turned on them as the Dutchwomen beat the Golden Knights 19-13 in the second game of the Liberty League series on Saturday afternoon.

The loss eliminated the Golden Knights from the Liberty League's postseason picture as they fell to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League. The win for Union edged the Dutchwomen in front by a half game as they moved to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in conference games. Normally a six-team playoff field, the Liberty League reduced its postseason to three games with a four-team format for 2021.

In each half, the Dutchwomen closed down the period with big runs, none more significant than in the second half. Union led 13-7 with just over 20 minutes to go, but Clarkson scored six straight to tie the game, with Julia Lavarnway scoring twice and assisting on a third goal in that run. The momentum seemingly on Clarkson's side, Union somehow shifted things to its direction, responding with six goals in a stretch of 6:32 to put the game away.

Kyrsten Stone led the Golden Knights with five points, scoring four goals and assisting on another, while Madelynn Barnum scored four goals and added five draw controls. Lavarnway was third on the team with three points. Rylee Ganter scooped up three groundballs while Emily Fischer and Carolynn Pechmann split time in the Clarkson crease, as Fischer had eight saves in 24-plus minutes and Pechmann stopped 10 shots in her 35-plus minutes.

For Union, Sydney McParlton scored seven points with four goals and three assists, and Isabel Bush scored six goals. Grace Heiting also added four points on two goals and two assists to go along with four groundballs. Dana Truini caused four turnovers and Lindsay Gerrato helped Union gain possession with 13 draws. Jenna Paszek stopped seven shots in 55 minutes.

Union finished with edges in shots (40-25), groundballs (23-14), and draw controls (22-12), a stark contrast to Clarkson's domination on Friday afternoon.
