Knights Fall to Top-Ranked RIT, 21-8

Potsdam, NY – After hanging with the top-ranked team in the country for the first 29 minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team gave up two goals in the final minute of the first half and then watched RIT score 13 goals in the final 30 minutes to drop a 21-8 Liberty League decision on Thursday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League while the Tigers remained unbeaten at 7-0 and 3-0. Clarkson has three more regular-season conference games to go, starting with Union College on Sunday afternoon.

RIT scored four of the first five goals in the opening quarter, but a last second goal by Pierce Currie pulled the Knights within two after 15 minutes. Clarkson pulled to within one midway through the second quarter as Jay Considine forced a turnover and then quickly scored at 10:10 and Bryan Penney skipped a low shot through the RIT defense at the 6:00 mark to make the score 5-4. The Tigers pushed their lead back to two about three-and-a-half minutes later, but the key scores for RIT came in the final minute when Larson Sundown scored with 34 seconds and just 2 seconds remaining to put the Tigers up 8-4.

Clarkson held modest advantages in shots (24-20), shots on goal (16-15), and groundballs (23-17) in the first half.

The second half saw RIT begin to find holes in the Golden Knights' defense as they changed speeds and created space in their offensive sets to keep Clarkson off-balance. The strategy worked, as RIT outscored the Knights 6-1 in the third quarter and then added a very early goal in the fourth to make the score 15-5. Pierce Currie scored twice in the fourth quarter as Clarkson kept pace in the first seven minutes, but after the substitutions began to flow RIT was able to take on a few goals in the final eight minutes to build a 13-goal margin.

RIT finished with leads in shots (45-40) and shots on goal (32-27). Walker Hare made 17 saves for the Tigers through the first 52 minutes before being relieved by Drew Hutchison for the final eight ticks. For Clarkson, all four goalies saw action, though the majority went to Kevin Dyckman who spent just under 50 minutes in the crease and stopped 10 shots.

Currie scored three goals and had three groundballs, while Considine added a pair of goals, caused two turnovers, and contributed five groundballs. Matthew Hansen won 15 of 25 tries on face-offs and had eight groundballs and Riley Holzman went 4-for-8 on face-offs. Tyler King also had five groundballs and caused two turnovers.

For RIT, Dawson Tait scored six goals and added an assist while Larson Sundown scored three goals with one assist and also scooped up four groundballs. Quinn Commandant and Ryan Barnable also had three points apiece. Tyler Sceviour led the Tigers with seven groundballs.
