Union Holds Off Clarkson, 16-10

Potsdam, NY – Junior Billy Bergan enjoyed his best day as a collegian with five points on three goals and two assists, but the effort wasn't enough as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team fell to eighth-ranked Union College 16-10 on Sunday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, while Union moved to 4-1 and 3-1 in conference games. Clarkson has two games remaining in the regular-season, visiting Route 11 rival St. Lawrence on Wednesday and hosting Skidmore next Saturday.

Clarkson opened the game with two goals in the first three minutes as Bergan found Pierce Currie at 13:40 and then scored himself at 12:01, but Union was not on its heels for long, breaking through offensively at the 9:51 mark and getting two momentum shifting goals in the final minute as Peter Burns scored with 51 seconds left and then again with just five seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the final minutes of the second quarter, Union built its advantage to five goals, but Matt Reilly scored with 25 seconds left in the half to put the margin at 8-4. Clarkson cut the deficit to two with a pair of goals just 37 seconds apart. Bergan scored on the man-up and Currie scored unassisted at 9:32 to bring the Knights closer momentarily, but again Union responded with three goals to push its advantage back to five. Clarkson closed out the third with two quick goals from Bergan and Bryan Penney, and Reilly scored in the first minute to again have the Knights within two. However, as it always seemed to on Sunday, Union had an answer. Keaton McCann scored twice to make it 13-9, and despite a fast response from Currie on the next face-off to get the deficit back to three, Hayden Frey scored back-to-back goals midway through the fourth quarter to fend off Clarkson's charge.

Bergan had a team-best five points on three goals and two assists and Currie scored three goals while Penney added three points on two goals and an assist. Matt Reilly also found the back of the net twice for the Golden Knights.

For Union, Keaton McCann scored six points on four goals and two assists and Hayden Frey added three goals and two assists for five points for the Dutchmen. Brian Davis also added a goal and three assists and Peter Burnes scored three goals.

Union outshot the Knights 43-34, including 28-21 in shots on goal, while the Knights won 19 of the 30 face-offs.
