Knights Swept By 17th-Ranked William Smith

Potsdam, NY – It took some time for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team to get rolling, and by the time the Golden Knights had found the back of the net the team was behind by too much to overcome, falling to 17th-ranked William Smith College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference games while William Smith improved to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in league contests. The Golden Knights will try to get back on the winning track with a non-league game against Oswego State on Wednesday.

Unlike Friday's tilt against the Herons when Clarkson scored early, it took close to 14 minutes before the Knights saw their side of the scoreboard flicker. William Smith had a three goals in the first 12 minutes before Grace Hagberg converted for the Knights at 16:18. However, that was the only goal for the Knights in the first half, and the Herons built their lead back to four within seven minutes and headed into the halftime break with a 5-1 lead.

Junior Sydney Roderick scored in the first minute of the second half and found grad student Katie Sergeant about two minutes later to make the score 6-3, but the Herons responded with a pair of goals just 90 seconds after Sergeant's tally and pushed the margin up to five. Hagberg scored at 24:24, but Clarkson's offense was quieted for the next 13 minutes as William Smith scored twice and burned minutes off the clock with a solid defense. Roderick added an unassisted goal at the 10:44 mark, but that was all that Clarkson could muster for the rest of the game.

Roderick finished with three points on two goals and an assist while Hagberg scored two goals, making that five games in a row in which she has scored at least a pair of goals. Sergeant added the other goal for the Knights, while Natalie Farnett and Emily Fischer tied for the team lead with three groundballs. Fisher also stopped 10 shots in 49 minutes, 16 seconds in the Clarkson crease, while Carolynn Pechmann made six saves in 10 minutes, 44 seconds of action as goalkeeper.

For William Smith, both Anna Murphy and Maddie Montgomery scored four goals and Payton McMahon added a goal and two assists. Mekayla Montgomery gained control on six draws and also added two groundballs. Maddie Bamberger made four saves for the Herons.
