Knights Fall in Consolation Game to Coast Guard Academy

Mechanicsburg, PA – Another scoreless stretch in the second half turned the tide against the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as the Golden Knights fell short in an up-and-down affair 91-82 to Coast Guard Academy in the consolation game of the Towneplace Suites Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 0-2 while Coast Guard moved to 1-3. Clarkson will be back in action on Tuesday when it faces Oswego State.

Clarkson led throughout the first half, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and edging forward to a nine-point advantage at 22-13 when Garrett Delaney hit a 3-pointer at 12:12. Less than five minutes later, a Roburt Welch make allowed the Knights to extend their lead to double figures, but the Bears crawled back into the game, getting to within as few as three, and trailing by four with just over three minutes to go. Late in the half, Chris Hulbert and Delaney both hit 3-pointers as the Knights went into the locker room with a 10-point lead.

Blake Gearhart hit a layup and hit a follow-up free throw to give the Knights a 13-point lead in the first minutes of the second half. The Knights still led by nine a few minutes later, but Clarkson's offense stalled and saw a sizeable advantage become a significant deficit. Coast Guard rolled off a 24-0 run in less than eight minutes, taking advantage of six Clarkson turnovers and seeing the Knights miss nine straight shots.

Though down by 13, Clarkson recovered over the next few minutes and pulled back within six after a 3-pointer from Ryan Miles-Ferguson with 2:20 to go. A pair of free throws a minute later from Miles-Ferguson closed the gap to just four, but Coast Guard put together just enough offense to hold off Clarkson's late charge.

The Knights shot 9-for-20 in the first half from beyond the 3-point arc, but made just two of their 16 shots from the perimeter in the second half.

Junior Blake Gearhart scored a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds four assists for Clarkson. Ryan Miles-Ferguson chipped in 14 points with seven boards and three assists and Chris Hulbert matched him on offense with 14 points while also adding four rebounds and four assists. Joe Lucas also added 13 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the floor.

For Coast Guard, Madison Maloney had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Garrett Drummond led all scorers with 24 points. Jake Brunswick (15 points) and Ben Yagey (12 points) were also in double figures.
