Clarkson Volleyball Sweeps Keuka on Senior Day

Potsdam, NY – Following a five-set loss against Cortland on Friday, the Clarkson University Volleyball team recovered quickly on Saturday, downing Keuka College in three straight sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-10)  to finish off the regular season at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights celebrated Senior Day with a victory, improving to 17-9 on the season, while Keuka dropped both of its matches against Clarkson and SUNY Cortland (3-1) to fall to 9-17. Clarkson's season continues next weekend at the Liberty League Tournament, where the Knights will face Ithaca College in one of two semifinal matchups.

Keuka played well to start the day against SUNY Cortland, taking the first set against the Red Dragons before falling in four, and the Wolves were equally plucky against the Golden Knights. In the opening set, the Golden Knights used numerous mini-runs of three straight points to slowly pull away from Keuka, extending their lead five separate times with 3-0 stretches. The key run came with the Knights up 13-8 as a kill from Kristin Werdine, block assists from Olivia Freer and Gillian Kurtic, and an attack error allowed the Knights to double-up Keuka (16-8). A little later, Clarkson squashed a rally with two more kills from Werdine and another from Megan McEwen to end the set.

The Wolves showed even more resolve in the second set, but Clarkson simply had too much offense for the visitors to overcome. Keuka led 13-11 near the midway point, only to see the Knights rattle off six straight points, beginning with a kill from Olivia Freer and ending with one from Gillian Kurtic. That was enough to alter the momentum as the Knights closed out the game by a seven-point margin.

Set number three was never really in doubt, as Clarkson raced out to an 11-3 lead in the early going. Though Keuka closed to within six at 14-8, the Knights again went on another big run with Alexandra Bergantz at the service line, and the junior was instrumental in the streak as she recorded a pair of aces to help the Knights ease their way to a lopsided win.

Clarkson delivered a balanced effort on both defense and offense, as no player reached double figures on defense. Bergantz led the way with nine digs to go along with four aces, while Emma Baxter, Cel Barrera-Lopez, Isabelle Crow, and Kristin Werdine each added seven digs. Crow also had 35 assists on offense, while Werdine tied for the team lead with 11 kills and contributed three aces. Gillian Kurtic also hit .455 with 11 kills against just one error in 22 swings while adding in four blocks. Olivia Freer tossed in eight kills and Megan McEwen finished off seven kills.

For Keuka, Megan McCann was the top offensive performer with seven kills. Casey Hunziker and Delaney Yorks shared setting duties with 11 and 9 assists, respectively, Yorks also had nine digs, as did Lauren Kuipers.
