Knights Continue Run of Postseason Wins Against Ithaca, Return to Liberty League Championship Match

Rochester, NY – Since Ithaca College joined the Liberty League in 2017, the Clarkson University Volleyball team has only beaten the Bombers once in the regular season. However, the Golden Knights continued their dominance of Ithaca in the postseason, eliminating them in the conference tournament for the fourth time in four seasons with a 3-1 victory (16-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19) in the Liberty League Semifinals Friday evening.

Clarkson improves to 18-9 on the season and will face St. Lawrence University in the conference championship after the Saints surprised RIT in the earlier semifinal on Friday afternoon. The two teams will match up at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

The Green and Gold have beaten Ithaca only once in four tries in Liberty League conference play, but during the Liberty League Tournament the Knights have twice beaten the Bombers in the semifinals and twice in the championship match. Clarkson also eliminated Ithaca from the NCAA Tournament in both 2015 and 2019.

The Golden Knights struggled coming out of the gate in the first set, dropping nine of the first 12 points and giving Ithaca seven of them via unforced errors. Clarkson dropped behind by nine after 15 points and trailed by double-digits near the midway points for the Bombers (14-4). The Green and Gold began to correct themselves from that point on, but the 10-point deficit was too much to overcome and the Knights dropped the opener by nine.

Fortunately for Clarkson, that steadying carried over to the second set, as Clarkson jumped out to a 6-2 lead. However, Ithaca scored six straight to take the lead and the edged out to a 13-8 point advantage. This time, the Knights had an answer, and turned a four-point deficit (17-13) into a one-point lead thanks to five straight points, including three straight aces from Gillian Kurtic. Ithaca recovered briefly, but Clarkson was able to extend its lead to four (24-20) after a kill from Olivia Freer. Although Ithaca scored three straight to tighten things up, another kill from Freer tied the match at a set apiece.

The third set appeared as if it would be another close affair as the two teams were tied at 5-5 in the early going, only to see Ithaca score four straight to force a Clarkson timeout. The Knights rallied back to within one when Isabelle Crow surprised the Ithaca defense with a quick kill, pulling Clarkson to within one, 13-12. Ithaca's defense pulled together in the next few points, picking up a pair on back-to-back blocks and recovering its cushion. Even that would be short-lived for Ithaca as Clarkson rallied with four straight points thanks to kills from Freer and Annabella Regan, as well as a block combination of Freer and Allyson Treichel, making it 20-19 and causing the Bombers to take a timeout in hopes of snuffing the rally. The strategy didn't work as Clarkson scored three straight points to take a two-point lead, but the Bombers did come back to tie the set at both 22 and 23, and regained the lead briefly at 24-23 only to see kills from Freer and Regan put the Knights back up 25-24. After a brief tie at 25, two straight kills from Kristin Werdine ended the set and put the Knights up 2-1.

Set number four never saw one team pull ahead in the early points as the two teams seesawed back and forth. Clarkson began to get a big of a foothold near the midway point of the set, earning its first three-point lead (14-11) thanks to four straight kills from Crow, Treichel, and a pair from Werdine. The Knights eventually edge out to an 18-15 lead, but two straight kills from Ithaca's Camryn O'Leary kept things close. Out of a timeout following the O'Leary kills, Ithaca committed three straight unforced errors and Annabella Regan followed with two kills to give the Knights an eight-point lead, too much of a margin for the Bombers to surmount.

Freshman Annabella Regan enjoyed the best match of her collegiate career, coming through with 14 kills and a .324 hitting percentage, while Kristin Werdine matched her with 14 more kills and Olivia Freer tacked on 11 kills. Isabelle Crow struck for seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage as well as 43 assists. Emma Baxter led the defense with 27 digs while both Werdine (17) and Crow (12) also reached double figures in that category.

Ithaca had a balanced attack on offense, led by Alison Lipton and Faith Sabatier, with each recording nine kills. Jordyn Lyn Hayashi had 29 digs while Laura Severance and Peyton Miller split the setting duties with 26 and 21 assists, respectively.
