Red Dragons Outlast Golden Knights in Five Sets

Potsdam, NY – Grad student Gillian Kurtic knocked down 20 kills for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, but her effort was not quite enough as SUNY Cortland edged the Golden Knights in five sets, 30-28, 16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-10 Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 16-9 on the season while SUNY Cortland edged up to 22-3 overall. Clarkson will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when the team celebrates Senior Day and hosts Keuka College at 1:30 pm.

The first set had 10 ties, but nearly all of them came late, as the game was tied only twice before Clarkson was able to climb all the way back from an early deficit to knot things up at 22-22. Clarkson had a set-point after block assists from Allyson Treichel and Isabelle Crow made the score 26-25 in the Knights' favor, but Cortland was able to rally back and put Clarkson on the edge at 27-26. Again, the Knights were up by a points at 28-27 after an attack error from the Dragons, but Cortland got back-to-back kills from Olivia Doorley to win the set.

Clarkson controlled the second near the midway point, and a strong run from the service line by Alexandra Bergantz kept the Red Dragons out of system as Clarkson delivered numerous kills to push a two-point lead to seven (18-11). Clarkson stayed the course for the rest of the game and closed out Cortland by nine.

The third game was similar to the second, as the two teams went back-and-forth in the early going only to see Clarkson rattle off seven straight at a key point, turning a two-point deficit into a five-point lead (20-15) thanks to timely kills from Annabella Regan. Cortland made a little run at the end of the set, but the Knights won by five as Isabelle Crow surprised the Dragons by putting the ball down to close out the game.

Cortland scored seven of the first eight points of the fourth set and never trailed, though Clarkson certainly put a scare into the Dragons by climbing back to within just one following an ace from Crow (12-11). However, that run must have taken ample energy out of the Golden Knights, as Cortland recovered and won by eight.

The Dragons used the momentum gained from the fourth set to finish off the Knights, never trailing in the fifth game. Cortland led by four (7-3) after back-to-back kills from Nicole Van Pelt and Doorley, forcing the Knights to call a timeout. Clarkson rallied to within two a few moments later at 12-10 thanks to a kill from Allyson Treichel, but after a brief break for the Red Dragons, Cortland closed things out with a pair of kills and an attack error from the Knights.

Kurtic posted 20 kills to lead all players on offense while Kristin Werdine notched a double-double on 10 kills and 23 digs. Olivia Freer also chipped in eight kills for the Knights. Isabelle Crow recorded 48 assists and added 11 digs, and Emma Baxter produced 37 digs in the back row for Clarkson.

For Cortland, Olivia Doorley had a double-double on 18 kills and 13 digs and Nicole Van Pelt added 12 kills. Ryan Hinshaw picked up 26 assists and 15 digs and Meadow Wittman joined her in setting with 19 assists and 12 more digs. Carly Haegele also recorded 28 digs for the Red Dragons.
