Knights Earn Liberty League Playoff Spot for Ninth Straight Year with Win Over Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Junior Kristin Werdine delivered 18 kills and the Clarkson University Volleyball team recorded 12 aces overall to claim a four-set victory over Skidmore College on Saturday, beating the Thoroughbreds 25-14, 25-5, 19-25, 25-12 to clinch a spot in the Liberty League Playoffs.

The Golden Knights improved to 16-8 overall and 5-2 in the Liberty League, finishing in third in the regular season. Skidmore was eliminated from the conference tournament picture with its defeat, falling to 10-15 overall and 3-4 in league games. Clarkson will finish off the home portion of its schedule next weekend when the team takes on SUNY Cortland on Friday and Keuka College on Saturday.

In the opening game, the two teams tied six times in the first 12 points before Clarkson gained a bit of a foothold thanks to kills from Kristin Werdine and Kristen Liu, but it was a four-point run near the midway point that provided some breathing room for the Knights. After a service error by Skidmore, Werdine rattled off three straight kills to give Clarkson an 18—10 advantage, and the Knights cruised from there, receiving offense from freshman Allyson Treichel down the stretch to cinch the 25-14 victory.

Set two saw Clarkson carry over some momentum from the first set as the Knights dominated Skidmore. The key contributor in the early going was Gillian Kurtic, who had three kills and three blocks in Clarkson's first 12 points as the Green and Gold raced out to a 12-1 lead, forcing Skidmore to take two timeouts. The brief breaks did little to quell Clarkson's offense, as the Annabella Regan delivered two more kills and Alexandra Bergantz picked up two more aces to put the Knights up 19-1, a more than comfortable advantage leading to a 25-5 win.

In stark contrast to the previous set, it was Skidmore that jumped out to an early lead as the Thoroughbreds scored six of the first seven points, though most of the points came on Clarkson miscues. After the Knights took a timeout, it was Skidmore that would begin making mistakes, allowing the Knights to come back and tie the set at 7-7 after a kill from Werdine, and another kill from the 2019 Liberty League Rookie of the Year put the Knights on top a point later. Clarkson would gain a three-point advantage shortly thereafter as Allyson Treichel produced a kill and Gillian Kurtic scored an ace, forcing the Thoroughbreds to take a timeout. Skidmore came back to tie the set at 12-12, but Clarkson scored three straight to regain its lead. That advantage was fleeting for the Knights as Skidmore took advantage of some Clarkson mistakes to score seven straight points for a 19-15 lead. The Knights never did get back on track, and fell 25-19.

The Knights suffered from some early hiccups in the fourth set as well, but the Knights gained the lead for good at 4-3 after a bad set from the Thoroughbreds and never looked back. Skidmore pulled to within three at 9-6, but Clarkson picked up kills from Allyson Treichel and Annabella Regan to extend their lead back to six at 12-6. The Knights wouldn't stop there, pushing the margin to eight on an ace from Emma Baxter and then to 10 a few points later with an ace from Abigail Spector. Fittingly, Clarkson would close out the match on a kill and then an ace from Gillian Kurtic.

Werdine finished with 18 kills and 11 digs to lead the Knights, while Treichel added nine kills and Kurtic produced seven kills and four total blocks. Isabelle Crow recorded 40 assists while Emma Baxter, Alexandra Bergantz, and Abigail Spector each kicked in three aces, with Baxter notching 19 digs and Bergantz adding 13 digs.
