Clarkson Volleyball Splits at Middlebury

Middlebury, VT – A day after sweeping a conference match, the Clarkson University Volleyball team headed to New England to take on a pair of top squads in the area and came away with a split, sweeping Endicott College (25-18, 25-21, 29-27) and falling to Middlebury College (24-26, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22) on Saturday.

The Golden Knights moved to 10-7 on the season while the Gulls fell to 9-4 and Middlebury remained unbeaten at 14-0. Clarkson returns to Liberty League play next weekend when the team hosts Bard College and Vassar College.

Clarkson's block came out strong against Endicott, gaining four points on blocks in the first nine (seven for Clarkson) overall. Endicott trailed by as many as six in the early going, but rallied back to tie the set at 13-13, only to see the effort go for not as Clarkson scored five straight. Up by three points a few moments later, the Knights got back-to-back kills from Gillian Kurtic and Isabelle Crow to regain the momentum and cruised to the win thanks to two more kills down the stretch from Kristin Werdine.

The second set saw Endicott take an early lead, but the Knights came back to gain a small advantage at 14-13. Three more points by Clarkson pushed the advantage to four, but two more times late in the set, Endicott rallied to within one. That ended after a timeout at 20-19 as Clarkson got a kill from Werdine and a solo block from Allyson Treichel and the Knights held on for their second set victory.

Set number three was much more contentious as every time it appeared that Clarkson was ready to pull away, Endicott had an answer. Down by four late (20-16), the Gulls scored four straight points with three kills and an ace to tie the set. Endicott would take the lead and actually had a pair of set points before the game moved into extras. Clarkson never trailed once the game moved into additional points and finally ended the match thanks to a kill from Werdine and block assists by Megan McEwen and Treichel.

Werdine finished with 16 kills against just two errors in 43 swings while Kurtic was solid all around with eight kills, five blocks, and three aces. Isabelle Crow also chipped in 30 assists and seven digs and Emma Baxter had 13 digs.

Versus Middlebury, Clarkson had a strong effort on offense, but came up just short in two sets late to fall in four. The Knights did take the opener after trailing by four on three separate occasions. Clarkson earned its first multiple-point lead at 22-20, forcing the Panthers to take a timeout. Clarkson still led by two on its first set point (24-22), but Middlebury scored two straight to tie at 24. A service error by Middlebury and an ace by Emma Baxter quickly ended the set after the final tie.

Middlebury then won the next three straight to stay undefeated. Clarkson was close in the second set, trailing by three late (18-15), but the Panthers scored five straight with three kills and two attack errors by the Knights to gain a safe advantage at the end. In set three, Clarkson again trailed by four early, but took the lead at 10-9 and the two teams jostled back and forth, with Clarkson again edging ahead by one, 19-18. Out of a timeout, Middlebury scored three straight, forcing the Knights to call for a break. However, Clarkson did not get the same kind of push, as Middlebury was able to maintain its advantage for the rest of the set. The fourth set witnessed Clarkson take a 14-10 lead after an ace from Baxter, but Middlebury rattled off the next seven points on three kills and four Clarkson miscues. The Knights rallied to get within one at 20-19 off a Werdine kill, but that would be as close as they would get.

Werdine was again the driving force behind the Clarkson offense, as she set a career-high in kills just one day after surpassing her old mark, recording 23 kills to go along with 13 digs against Middlebury. Kurtic also had 17 kills on offense for the Knights. Isabelle Crow delivered 51 assists and 17 digs and Emma Baxter had 39 digs, four assists, and three aces. Abigail Spector (11 digs) and Cel Barrera-Lopez (10 digs) also reached double figures on defense.
