Knights Sweep Bard for Second Straight Conference Win

Potsdam, NY – With 14 aces overall, the Clarkson University Volleyball team kept Bard College uncomfortable on serve receive all evening, as the Golden Knights closed out the Raptors in three straight sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-12) in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while Bard fell to 5-9 and 1-2 in conference games. Clarkson will face Vassar College at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon, while the Raptors will head down the road to take on St. Lawrence University.

In the opening set, Bard struggled when Clarkson had the serve, especially once Abigail Spector entered the game. The freshman defensive specialist delivered four aces in a stretch of five points to give the Knights an early advantage, and Clarkson extended that lead on its next turn of serving as Gillian Kurtic connected for three aces in a row. Up by double figures at the midway point of the set, Clarkson cruised to the win in the first game.

In the next two games, Bard was able to keep from getting aced quite as much, but the Raptors were still on their heels and out of system, allowing the Knights to increase their offensive output with 12 kills per set in the final two games. For the match, the Knights hit .303 (34-11-76) while Bard produced a negative hitting percentage at -.027 (14-16-73).

Isabelle Crow led the team with 25 assists while also adding an ace, a block and five digs. Gillian Kurtic hit .467 in the match (8-1-15) and Megan McEwen blasted a .778 hitting percentage with seven kills on nine swings. Abigail Spector added seven aces and Kurtic also contributed four aces. Kristin Werdine picked up 10 digs and Emma Baxter added nine digs.

For Bard, no player had more than three kills in the match and Adi David had eight assists and a pair of block assists. Ryan Lum led the team defensively with eight digs.
