Men's Hockey Celebrates A Banner Year at Awards Banquet

The Clarkson University Men's Hockey team celebrated one of the best seasons in the program's 97-year history on Saturday, April 27 at the annual Knight Club Hockey Awards Banquet. Family, friends, and booster club members paid tribute to the 2018-19 Golden Knights and honored the three seniors in the Class of 2019.

The Golden Knights' Class of 2019 – Juho Jokiharju, Marly Quince and Aaron Thow - compiled 87 victories, the most by any Clarkson senior class in 20 seasons and helped to lead the Green and Gold to their first ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament title since 2007. The seniors skated in four winning seasons, including three 20-win campaigns, played in four consecutive ECAC Hockey playoff series at Cheel Arena, winning four postseason match-ups before the home crowd.

The Class of 2019 closed out their collegiate careers by helping to lead the Green and Gold to the program's 74th winning season and the most victories for the Golden Knights since 1996-97 with a 26-11-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 13-7-2 league mark. The seniors also became the first class at Clarkson to win three consecutive in-season tournaments when Clarkson captured the Desert Hockey Classic title in late December out in Arizona. The seniors were also a part of the 2016 Shillelagh Tournament Champions in South Bend, IN and the 2017 Friendship Four Champions in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The Knights, who ranked among the top 20 programs in the national polls throughout the majority of the season, finishing 8th in the final USA Today/U.S. Hockey Magazine poll, won the program's sixth ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship crown and made their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Ten awards were recognized at the banquet. Headlining the list of recipients were Jake Kielly and Nico Sturm, who were named as co-recipients of the Bill Harrison Clarkson Most Valuable Player in honor of the successful Clarkson coach of the late 1940s and 1950s.

A junior goaltender, Kielly started all 39 games and was a Top 5 Finalist for the Mike Richter Award, which annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in the NCAA. Also a Finalist for ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year and a second-team league all-star, Kielly ranked among the NCAA's best in all the major goaltending categories. The native of Eden Prairie, Minn. was second in Division I in wins with 26, tied for fifth in shutouts with five,  posted a .929 save percentage (9th in the nation) and a 1.91 goals against average (11th). An Assistant Captain, he allowed two-or-fewer goals in 28 of the 39 games and led all active NCAA goaltenders in career shutouts with 16. Kielly places third on the Green and Gold's all-time win list with a 64-37-13 career record. He was named MVP of the Desert Hockey Classic, gained ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month honors for October and January and earned ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week accolades three times this season (11/5, 11/19, 12/31) along with being named to the ECAC Hockey All-Tournament Team.

Clarkson leading scorer, Sturm was a Top 10 Hobey Baker Finalist, a First-Team All-American, one of three finalists for ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, earned ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Forward for the second consecutive season and was First-Team All-League All-Star along with being named to conference championship tournament All-Tournament team. The junior center paced the Green and Gold's offensive effort with 45 points, tying for 8th in the NCAA in points per game (1.15). He tallied 14 goals and a team-high 31 assists (tied for 4th in the nation), setting up more goals in a season than any Golden Knight in 23 years. A co-captain, he recorded at least one point in 32 of 39 games and posted 13 multiple-point outings. Sturm joined Clarkson's Century Club with a goal and an assist in the ECAC Quarterfinal Game 2, 5-2 victory over Yale  (3/16) and finished his collegiate career with 103 points on 36 goals and 67 assists through 118 games. The Augsburg, Germany native became the first Clarkson junior to reach 100 points since Erik Cole '00 (103 points) in the 1999-2000 campaign. Sturm held the best overall plus/minus rating in ECAC Hockey (+23). He was Clarkson's top center at the face off circle, winning 57.9% of his draws (392-of-677).

Quince was honored with the Mike Morrison Dedication Award for teamwork, hustle and dedication. The award is named in honor of the former Clarkson captain who died in a work accident on July 27, 1989. A senior forward from Sioux Lookout, Ont., Quince served as an Assistant Captain and was a leading center for the Knights, winning 53.1% of his draws (127-of-239). He played in 34 games recording 10 points and seven assists. Two of his three goals were game-winners.

Greg Moro was the recipient of the Clarkson Ironman Award, presented to the team member who most demonstrated the will and determination to overcome his injuries and contribute to the team. A native of Edmonton, Alb., the junior defenseman battled through injuries to make a substantial contribution to the Knights' success this winter. Moro was also named Clarkson's Best Defensive Player. A Top 3 Finalist for ECAC's Best Defensive Defenseman, Moro made a significant offensive contribution from the blueline. He was second for the Knights in scoring among defensemen with 20 points - two more points than he combined for in 76 games through his first two seasons with the Green and Gold. Moro connected for five goals and 15 assists and tallied four times on the power play. Moro recorded his first career multiple-goal game with a pair of scores, including the game-winner, in 5-2 victory at RPI (1/12). He posted a +17 plus/minus, second best for the Knights, and was third on team in blocked shots (43).

Connor McCarthy was presented with the Richmond Unsung Hero Award. Named in honor of loyal Clarkson followers Ernie and Connie Richmond, the Richmond award is presented to a Golden Knight who has shown improvement in his playing ability and displayed team leadership. A sophomore, defenseman, McCarthy tallied 14 points on four goals and 10 assists playing in all 39 games after recording just one assist in nine games last season. The biggest player on the Knights' roster, McCarthy was especially effective on the power play with eight (3-5) of his points this season coming on the man-advantage. The LaSalle, Que. native had four assists in the postseason, with three coming on the power play.

Jack Jacome was honored with the Fran Neragin Award. Named in honor of the loyal Clarkson hockey booster who passed away in 1984, the Neragin Award is presented to a player who displays unselfish play and sportsmanship both on and off the ice. Jacome, a sophomore wing from Caledon, Ont. was fifth on Clarkson in points with 24, including 18 assists. He had points in 18 games, including six multiple-point outings.

Josh Dunne was selected as the Knights' Rookie of the Year. The native of O'Fallon, Mo. emerged as one of the top rookie forwards in the nation. An early-season injury kept him from an all-star campaign in his collegiate debut, but he still put up some impressive numbers, playing at center. Dunne skated in 32 games and tied as Clarkson's  second-leading goal scorer with 14 tallies to go along with nine assists.  He tallied five times on the power play, netted four game-winning goals and scored once shorthanded.  Dunne posted a +14, 29 blocked shots and won the second most face offs for the Knights (211).

Devin Brosseau was honored as Clarkson's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An exceptional student-athlete who served as a Golden Knights co-captain while studying in the University's rigorous Financial Information Analysis program, posting a 3.974 GPA.  A junior forward, who will earn his bachelor degree this May, Brosseau was also the winner of ECAC Hockey's prestigious Student-Athlete of the Year Award. He was named  Most Valuable Player of ECAC Championship Tournament after scoring two goals and setting up the game-winner in 3-2 overtime championship win vs Cornell (3/23). Brosseau was the Knights' third-leading scorer with 29 points on 14 goals and 15 assists in 38 games. He held the team lead in power-play markers (8) and recorded at least one point in 24 games. The St. Lambert, Que. native is heavily involved and heads up many of Clarkson Hockey's community service activities. Brosseau was also one of the 17 nominees nationwide for the 2019 Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Sturm was presented with Clarkson's Junior Academic Achievement Award and John Carter MacLean was honored with the Sophomore Academic Achievement Award.
