Clarkson Drops Pair Against Elmhurst, 5-0 and 4-1

Auburndale, FL – A day after pounding out 17 hits, the Clarkson University Baseball team was held to just a single run in 14 innings as the Golden Knights dropped a doubleheader to Elmhurst College, 5-0 and 4-1, Wednesday morning at the Lake Myrtle Baseball Complex.

The Knights dropped to 3-4 on the season and will take on both SUNY Cobleskill and Babson College on Wednesday to close out their series of games in Florida. The contest versus Babson was added recently due to the postponement of Clarkson's four-game series against RIT this coming weekend.

The first game came down to the Jays coming through with runners in scoring position and the Knights coming up short in similar situations. Elmhurst scored its first run in the top of the third thanks to back-to-back hits from Reagan McReynolds and Trey Compton, with the latter delivering a run-scoring double. In the top of the fourth, Matt Wilson doubled home Jacob McMillan and Wilson was sent home on an RBI-single by James Wick to make the score 3-0. Elmhurst tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Compton delivered a two-out triple to score Christian Ott and then scored himself on a single from Tyler Kledzik.

The Golden Knights were not so lucky in their opportunities. Three straight hits from Joe Stockman, Mike Messier and Nate Burns loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat. In the fourth, Dan Pariso stood on second after a one-out double, but never advanced another base, and in the fifth Stockman was on second with another one-out double and never came around. In the bottom half of the sixth, Ben Knauf led off with a double, but he, too, could not break the scoreless streak for the Knights.

Mark Connor went seven innings, allowing nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts to take the loss. Austin MacMillan scattered six hits and no walks in seven innings for Elmhurst.

In game two, Clarkson had a few chances and finally scored in the top of the seventh on a double from Mike Krick which scored Will Coleman. However, Alec Berry came on to end the threat with two straight strikeouts to preserve the win for the Jays.

Elmhurst opened the scoring with a solo home run from Tyler Kledzik in the third and then added two runs in the fifth on an RBI-groundout from Trey Compton and Trevor Horvath scampering home on a wild pitch. The Jays would add one more run in the sixth on a Horvath sacrifice fly.

Stockman finished with four hits in six at bats for the Knights, but he was the only player to record multiple hits in each game. Jeremy Barber took the loss in game two, allowing four hits and two walks in four innings, though the senior did strike out six hitters. Jordan Scrimpsher allowed five hits and two walks over 6.1 innings to earn the win, with Berry coming in for the final two outs to gain a save.
