Clarkson Softball Splits with Wisconson-Oshkosh and Southern Maine

Clermont, FL – Although the team split its doubleheader on Sunday, the Clarkson University Softball team enjoyed its best day in Florida so far, dropping a 3-2 decision to 25th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh and recovering for a 9-4 win against Southern Maine.

In the opener, the Golden Knights fell behind by a run in the bottom of the first inning when Erika Berry singled, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch. Clarkson tied the game in the top of the third when Danielle Whitham reached on a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single through the left side by Summer Lancette. The Titans responded with two in the bottom half of the frame. Erika Berry doubled and Natalie Dillon singled to put runners on the corners. A fielder's choice allowed Berry to score and Carly Szada reached on an infield single to plate what proved to be the winning run.

Clarkson wouldn't fold, however, holding the Titans scoreless for the next three innings. The Knights inched to within a run in the top of the seventh as Karlie Neuhausser doubled to right-center and then scored on a throwing error, but the Green and Gold couldn't come up with an extra run to potentially force extra innings.

Summer Lancette went 3-for-3 in the game and Kat Plescow recorded two hits in three at bats. Maggie Stark took the loss by allowing three earned runs in three innings. Leah Allen closed out the game for the Knights, striking out two in the final three innings. For Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Claire Petrus improved to 6-0 with seven strong innings, giving up just one earned run.

In game two, Clarkson fell behind by a score of 4-1 through the first five and a half innings, but an eight-run bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Michele Winn grand slam, put the Knights ahead.

Southern Maine scored in the top of the first because of a throwing error, but Clarkson responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Hannah Bowen delivered her first collegiate home run. The Huskies' Taylor Lux plated two with a double in the fourth and another throwing error allowed Southern Maine to pad its lead to 4-1. The three-run advantage, however, wasn't close to enough to thwart Clarkson's comeback.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hannah Isaacson opened with a walk and was followed by a Neuhausser single and a Kyrstin Messier walk to load the bases. Riley LeBourveau forced in a run with a bases loaded walk and Danielle Whitham reached on an error to get another run home. Summer Lancette's bases loaded walk tied the game, and Bridget Woolley's single pushed the Knights ahead, 5-4. The big blow came when the next batter, Michele Winn, cleared the bases with a grand slam, the second of her collegiate career and her eight home run overall in 47 games with the Golden Knights. Clarkson scored eight runs in the sixth on just three hits.

Sam Mennig picked up the win, allowing seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings. Among the four runs she allowed, only one was earned. Bridget Woolley finished with two hits, her third multi-hit game in Florida.
