James Homan Named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year

For the first time in more than a decade, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team saw one of its student-athletes earn one of the major honors among the Liberty League's All-Star awards as senior James Homan headlined the Golden Knights' haul by being named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year.

Homan, also picked as a Liberty League First-Team All-Star, is the first Clarkson player to gain one of the key end-of-season honors in the conference since Scott Desmond was selected as Liberty League Rookie of the Year in 2007. In addition to Homan, sophomore Mack Walton was chosen as a Liberty League Second-Team All-Star and Henry Gomez earned Liberty League Honorable Mention All-Star status.

Homan captained a defensive effort that allowed a league-low 10 goals in 17 games all season long for a conference-best 0.59 goals per game and a 0.57 goals against average, which currently ranks 16th in all of Division III. Clarkson's defense also was 10th in the nation in save percentage (.873), owed in part to the Knights not allowing quality opportunities on the frame, and 17th in shutout percentage (0.59). During the regular season, Clarkson ranked second in the conference in both shots allowed per game (9.41) and corner kicks allowed per game (3.47). Homan was twice picked as the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week and was a key component of the Golden Knights' offense, tying for third on the team in goals with three, including a pair of game-winners.

A Liberty League Honorable Mention as a freshman in 2017, Walton edged up a spot in the conference by earning Second-Team status this year. The second-year midfielder's prowess was easily definable on both sides of the ball as he also was a key component in Clarkson's defensive effort and a big part of the team's offense, ranking fourth in points with eight thanks to three goals and two assists. Five of those points came during conference games as he scored in back-to-back games against Bard and Skidmore.

A first-time league all-star, Henry Gomez led the Golden Knights on offense with 13 points, scoring six goals and adding one assist. Gomez ranked 10th in the conference in shots (2.00 spg) and was tied for third in goals scored with six.
