Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Fall 1-0 at Vassar to Miss Out on Playoffs

Poughkeepsie, NY – A jumbled playoff picture cleared itself on Saturday afternoon, but the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team will find itself on the outside after falling 1-0 to Vassar College.

The Golden Knights did not have to win on Saturday to get into the playoffs, but a win would have clinched a spot. Unfortunately, the rest of the league did not follow that script as a couple of teams passed the Green and Gold in the standings after gaining wins on Saturday. Clarkson saw its season come to a close at 7-5-4 overall and 2-4-3 in the Liberty League. Vassar's win clinched a first-round bye as the Brewers improved to 6-5-6 overall and 4-1-4 in league play.

The two teams were scoreless for the first half, but it wasn't for a lack of solid scoring chances. Zach Ruthfield was denied in the first three minutes on a shot from the left side in close when Jacob Raphan was able to reduce the angle near the post. Ruthfield had a penalty kick chance in the 11th minute as well, and was again denied by Raphan as he dove to his right to make the stop.

Vassar had a few chances in the middle of the opening half as well with one going just high and another hard grounder from 20 yards out getting denied by Ian Burgos.

The start of the second half saw a number of scoring chances for both teams in the first 10 minutes. Clarkson had one shot go just wide while attacking on the break, and Vassar had one shot go high from about 10 yards out, another stopped in close by Burgos, and one more attempt was tapped just wide from the six.

Vassar broke the scoreless run for both teams with a goal in the 69th minute. Koray Tekin stepped in front to intercept a pass near the midfield line and then lofted a pass over the Clarkson defense to Mauricio Mejia. He then took a couple of steps towards the right corner of the penalty area and flicked a ball over Burgos, as it took one bounce just in front of the goal line and in at 68:14.

Clarkson had one solid chance in the final dozen minutes when Marco Meirinho ripped a shot from the top of the box. Despite a bit of a screen, Raphan was able to smother the shot and keep the Knights off the board.

Vassar ended with a 12-9 advantage in total shots, though the teams each had five chances on goal. Clarkson had four corners to the Brewers two. Ian Burgos made three saves in 70 minutes and Sam Robertson came on to make one save in the final 20 minutes for Clarkson. Raphan ended the contest with five stops.
