Knights Use Big First-Half Run to Gain Win Over SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – A huge run between the first and second quarters provided the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team plenty of cushion to withstand a fourth quarter comeback as the Golden Knights picked up their first win of the season with a 72-63 victory over SUNY Canton Monday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 1-1 on the season and are off for the next eight days until they face SUNY Potsdam. The Kangaroos dropped to 0-3 on the year.

Despite a slow start, Clarkson shot 51.6% from the field (16-for-31) in the first half, building a 19-point halftime lead and holding on for the nine-point victory after shooting 40.0% in the final 20 minutes.

Things did not start off well for Clarkson as SUNY Canton converted on its first three shots to quickly build a 6-0 lead. That margin as maintained at 9-3 a few moments later, but the Golden Knights went on a 9-2 run to take the lead when Carly Assimon hit a 3-pointer. That was far from the end of the run, however, as the Knights tacked on 15 more points over the course of the next few minutes, overlapping the first and second period, to take a 27-11 advantage following an Emma Buonanno layup. Though Sade Rogers briefly stopped Canton's struggles (0-for-12 with four turnovers in a 20-1 run by the Knights), Clarkson extended its advantage to 20 with 4:22 to go (34-14), making it a 31-5 run overall.

A three-point play by Buonanno at 6:43 of the third quarter kept the Knights up by 18 points and a 3-pointer by Assimon a few minutes later put the Knights up by 17 points, but Canton began to crawl back into the contest in the fourth quarter. Clarkson led by as many as 15 in the fourth, but the Kangaroos cut the margin to eight (58-50) and later picked up a 3-pointer from Breanna Cullers and two free throws from Jenifer Morgan-Aubin to draw within four points at 62-58 with just a couple minutes remaining. Clarkson extended its advantage back to six on a Buonanno make, but the key down the stretch was a 3-pointer from the corner in the final minute by Molly Stewart which all but closed out the Roos' comeback hopes.

Assimon finished with a team-high 16 points, shooting 6-for-13 overall and 4-for-10 from the 3-point line, while Stewart chipped in 15 points. Hannah Earl also scored 14, Buonanno tossed in 11 points, and three steals. Claire Flannery scored nine points on 4-for-6 shooting in only 13 minutes, and Rachel Marion also grabbed eight rebounds for the Knights.

For SUNY Canton, Sade Rogers shot 6-for-10 from the field for a game-high 18 points. Morgan-Aubin added 14 points and 7 rebounds while Breanna Cullers contributed 12 points, 7 boards, and 5 steals. Tyberia Wallace also scored 12 points for the Kangaroos.
