Potsdam Downs Knights, 74-63

Potsdam, NY – Shooting 64 percent in the second half SUNY Potsdam weathered a steady comeback by the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 74-63 decision in non-league action Tuesday evening at Potsdam's Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 on the season and will begin league play this weekend when they host Rensselaer and Skidmore College. Potsdam moved to 3-3 on the season.

Though the Bears would commit nine turnovers in the second half, Potsdam shot 9-for-14 (64.3%) in the third quarter and 7-for-11 (63.6%) in the fourth quarter to keep Clarkson at a safe distance. The Golden Knights struck for six 3-pointers in the second half to stay within striking distance.

The Golden Knights struggled mightily in the first quarter, shooting just 3-for-21 from the floor. However, Clarkson was able to keep the game close by forcing Potsdam into committing four turnovers while limiting its own miscues to just one in the opening 10 minutes. The Knights trailed by six at the first break, but quickly rallied with three straight baskets in the first 77 seconds, including a layup from Carly Assimon, a jumper from Emma Buonanno and then a fast break layup by Buonanno from Assimon. The two teams would be tied at 18 a few moments later, but Clarkson went 0-for-4 from the floor over the next couple of minutes, allowing Postdam to regain the advantage it had between the first and second periods. Clarkson's Emily Zeyak, in her first action of the year, hit a 3-pointer from the elbow extended, but Potsdam would continue its 10-3 run, pushing its lead to a game-high seven points with just a minute remaining.

At the start of the third period, the margin went back and forth between double figures and single digits before Potsdam went on a 9-0 run to extend its advantage to 16 points (46-30) with 1:42 remaining. Clarkson then began to employ a full-court press, getting solid results with two turnovers to reduce the deficit to just eight points at the conclusion of the period.

Clarkson pulled to within four (50-46) on a 3-pointer from Molly Stewart in the opening minutes of the fourth, but there would be no completed comeback for the Golden Knights. Potsdam continued to get the ball inside with strong drives and got to the line when the ball would not go down. The score was 57-53 at the midway point of the fourth, but Potsdam went on a 10-3 run to return to its comfortable edge. The Bears would simply hit their free throws in the waning moments to hold on for the win.

Carly Assimon scored 16 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, to lead the Knights, adding in four rebounds and four assists as well. Kati Gotch recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Emma Buonanno scored 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting off the bench for Clarkson. Molly Stewart also chipped in 10 points.

For Potsdam, Dyamon Hunter scored 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting while
Naya Walters added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Devyn Elliott added 16 points and seven boards and Nicole Hansen produced 13 points, going 5-for-5 from the field.
