Clarkson Splits in Opening Doubleheader

On the opening day of the season, the Clarkson University Baseball split its two games as the Golden Knights defeated Endicott College 6-4 before falling to St. Olaf's College 14-6.

Clarkson starts the season 1-1. Endicott finishes its Florida trip with a 5-3 record. St. Olaf's improves to 3-2.

Clarkson fell behind 2-0 after three and a half innings. The deficit could have been worse as Endicott got runners on in each of the first four innings, but Ted Wilson was able to limit the damage and caused Endicott to leave runners on base at the end of each frame.

After just one hit in the first three innings, the Clarkson offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dom Pirro led the inning off with a single to left and then Chris Miller followed him with a single to almost the same spot. Brad Pearson then got Clarkson on the scoreboard with a single to right to score Pirro. Cam Bando kept the train moving and he got his first collegiate RBI as he knocked in Miller with a single to left. Joe Fraser made it five hits in a row for Clarkson with a single to right field to load the bases. After Endicott was able to get a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Joe Stockman hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Pearson to score the third and final run of the inning.

Endicott answered back with a quick two runs of its own in the top of the fifth thanks to four hits and one Clarkson error. However, the Golden Knights scored two runs of their own in the fifth to regain the lead. Will Coleman led off the inning with a hit by pitch and then scored on a long double to left field off the bat of Pirro. After two pop outs, Bando knocked his third hit of the game to score Pirro. The Green and Gold scored an insurance run in the sixth. Mike Bonk launched a double to left field and then came around to score on a wild pitch.

That was all the runs Clarkson needed as Wilson allowed just the four runs through his six innings to earn the victory. Ryan Riley then came in for the final three innings and did not allow a run to earn the save.

In the second game of the day, Clarkson fell behind early to St. Olaf's and was unable to regain the lead.

Clarkson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Connor Dietrich led the game off with a single up the middle and then stole second base. Dietrich came around to score on a two-out single by Bando. However, that was the last time as Clarkson led as the Lions scored twice in their half of the first and then added two more runs in the second.

Clarkson answered back with two runs of its own in the top of the third. Dietrich again led off the inning, this time the senior left fielder struck out, but was able to reach base on a dropped third strike. Pirro and Miller then lined consecutive singles to left and right field respectively to score Dietrich and put runners on first and second with no outs. A Pearson ground out moved the runners to second and third with Bando coming to the plate. Bando could only ground into a fielder's choice with Pirro getting tagged out as he tried to head home. Clarkson did get one more run when Miller scored on a passed ball, but a strikeout on the next pitch ended the inning.

St. Olaf scored for the third consecutive inning to start the game, as the Lions added four runs in the bottom of the third for an 8-3 lead. Clarkson got one run back in the fourth when Alex Hill and Mike Messier had consecutive singles and Hill ended up scoring on another St. Olaf passed ball.

St. Olaf added a run in the fifth thanks to a lead-off double and a Clarkson error. The Golden Knights staged one final rally in the top of the sixth. Joe Riccardi worked a one-out walk before Dietrich, Pirro, and Miller all earned two-out walks of their own. Pearson was then hit by a pitch to score the second Green and Gold run of the inning. That was the end of the rally though when Bando hit into a fielder's choice. That made the score 8-6.

However, the Lions added a run in seventh and then blew the game open in the eighth when Ryan Iverson launched a grand slam over the left field fence.

Coleman took the loss on the mound in the second game. He threw the first three innings before Nate Burns threw four and a third innings in his first collegiate appearance. Will Miles and Knauf combined to throw the final two thirds.

Clarkson will be right back at it on Sunday with games against Lawrence at 11:15 am and against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 3:30 pm.
