Clarkson Set to Make ECAC Hockey's Longest Trip

PDF of weekly release

Looking to use a thrilling win over its archrival as the catalyst for a strong showing down the stretch the Clarkson University Hockey team will be striving to improve its position in the ECAC Hockey standings with six games remaining in the regular season. After skating to a 3-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday the Golden Knights stand at 12-12-4 overall and are in seventh place in the conference with a 7-7-2 ECAC Hockey mark. Guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, Clarkson takes to the road this weekend for its longest league trip, playing at Quinnipiac and Princeton.

In its lone action of the weekend, Clarkson snapped out of a four-game winless skid with the come-from-behind win over the Saints. Senior A.J. Fossen started the rally and freshman Nico Sturm finished it off with a pair of goals as the Green and Gold gained their first home victory since December 2 before an overflowing North Country crowd of 3,640 fans at Cheel Arena.  Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly turned aside 21 off 22 St. Lawrence shots.

• Quinnipiac leads the all-time series, which first started with a 4-0 Clarkson win in Northford, CT on February 8, 2000, 14-9-3. The Bobcats are on a current four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) against the Knights. The Knights' last win in Hamden was a 5-3 triumph on December 4, 2010. Clarkson is 2-5-2 all-time at High Points Solutions Arena.
• Clarkson holds a decisive 83-31-5 lead in the all-time series against Princeton, which began with an 8-5 Knight victory in New Jersey on January 17, 1928. Clarkson is 7-3 over the Tigers in their last 10 games and has won the last four meetings, all coming in Potsdam.  Clarkson, however, is 0-2 in its last two appearances in Hobey Baker Rink.
• Clarkson plays four of its six remaining regular season games on the road. The Knights are 6-4-2 on opponents' home ice this season.  After this weekend, the Green and Gold host Colgate and Cornell in their final home stand on February 17-18, and then close out the schedule at Harvard and Dartmouth on February 24-25.
• The Knights are five points out of fourth place for the final first-round playoff bye, and five points from falling to ninth place for a road trip in the playoff's first round.
• The Knights are averaging 3.07 Goals Per Game (tied for 21st in Division I), the best GPG average at Clarkson since 2006-07 season (3.48 GPG).
• Nico Sturm posted his second-career two-goal outing in the win over St. Lawrence. His first multiple-goal game came on January 14 in the 7-2 win at Brown. Sturm has five goals and one assist in the past six games. He is the Knights' third-leading scorer with 19 points, including eight goals. Sturm is one of the Knights' top centers on faceoffs, winning 56.1% of his draws (194-152).
• Clarkson's top two scorers both played a role in the Knights' win over the Saints. Senior Jordan Boucher and junior Sam Vigneault combined to set up Clarkson's first goal to start the Green and Gold rally. Vigneault posts a team-high 25 points and 18 assists. Boucher shares the Clarkson lead in goals with 10 and has 23 points. Boucher and Vigneault ranked first and second among Clarkson's current career scoring leaders with 65 (27-38) and 64 (25-39) points, respectively.
• A.J. Fossen scored his fifth goal of the season and first since December 3 to start the Green and Gold's comeback against St. Lawrence.
• Freshman Sheldon Rempal set up Sturm for the game-winner on Saturday. Rempal is the Knights' fourth leading scorer with 18 points (7-11). He has five points (2-3) over the past six games.
• After missing the previous two games with an injury, senior defenseman, captain James de Haas led a stingy defensive effort against St. Lawrence, allowing the Saints only 22 shots on goal.  The Detroit Red Wings draft choice leads the Green and Gold in scoring from the blueline with 14 points on four goals and 10 assists. de Haas has an assist in four of his last five games, including on Clarkson's third goal Satutray. de Haas has been selected as one of 15 top NCAA men's ice hockey student-athletes who excels both on and off the ice, and is a candidate for the 2016-17 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate hockey.
• The Knights saw their power-play goal-scoring streak end at seven games after going 0-of-7 with the man-advantage. on Saturday.  The Knights had scored at least one power-play goal in each of the first seven games in 2017. Overall, Clarkson is ranked 25th in the nation on the power play at 19% (26-137). The Green and Gold own the second-best power play in ECAC Hockey, clicking at 22.7% (15-66) in league action.
• Despite not having any players among the top 26 in the country for points per game by a freshman, Clarkson's Class of 2020 is one of the most productive groups in the country.   The Knights' freshmen lead ECAC Hockey rookies in scoring and are tied for sixth overall in the NCAA, averaging 2.71 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters, and Kielly (one assist) have accounted for 34% of Clarkson's offense with 76 points on 29 goals and 47 assists.  The freshman class accounted for four of the Knights' six goals over the past three games and five of Clarkson's 10 assists.
• Clarkson has four wins over Top 15 Teams (on road - 4-3 at Lowell, 3-1 at Union, 2-0 at Notre Dame, and Saturday at home against St. Lawrence) and a pair of ties vs Top 15 foes  (3-3 at Providence, 3-3 at Cornell).
• Ten different players have accounted for Clarkson's 12 game-winning goals. Senior Troy Josephs is the only Knight with multiple game-winners with three. Josephs also posts a team-high +8 plus/minus rating.
• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 25 of Clarkson's 28 games, including the last 18. He posts a .910 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average.
• For the first time in six games, on Saturday in the win against St. Lawrence, Clarkson did not score the opening goal. The Green and Gold are 3-6-1 when the opponent scores first.
• Clarkson is 6-6 when outshooting opponents. The Knights allowed a season-low 17 shots in the one-goal loss to Rensselaer on January 28, and just 22 in the win over St. Lawrence.
• Clarkson played Saturday's game in throwback jerseys, replicas of the 1955-56 undefeated season. The Knights also had a large contingent of over 40 alumni back, who played in an outdoor game earlier in the day as part of the University's COGO festivities. Many of those alumni played for former Clarkson Head Coach Mark Morris, who now is in charge of the St. Lawrence program.
