Michael King Named D3soccer.com All-American

With eight shutouts and a save percentage of .881, senior goalkeeper Michael King of the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team was selected as D3soccer.com Third-Team All-American when the teams were announced on Wednesday, becoming just the seventh player in program history to earn All-American honors from any national outlet since the program's inception in 1953.

2016 D3Soccer.com All-Americans

Though several other Golden Knights have earned NSCAA All-Region honors in the last quarter century, King became the first Clarkson player to earn any national recognition as an All-American since Michael Kirmse was a second-team honoree in 1993. He is also the first Clarkson goalkeeper to earn All-American status since Tim MacCarrick in 1983.

The entire Clarkson defense stood out in 2016 as the Golden Knights ranked 33rd in goals against average (0.78 gpg) and 29th in shutout percentage (0.50), but it was King who backboned the effort. The senior from Verona, NJ led the Liberty League in every statistical category for goalkeepers, including total saves (74) and saves per game (4.93 spg), while his accomplishments were even more impressive when considering where they ranked on the national level. King finished fourth in save percentage (.881) and 14th in goals against average (0.642) among all goalkeepers in NCAA Division III. His eight shutouts in 2016 were also just two shy of the single-season record at Clarkson, a program which dates back to 1953.
