Mercer Nets Two in 2-1 Win Over Colgate

Two goals by co-captain Cayley Mercer (Senior/Exeter, ONT) got the third-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team back on the winning track as the Golden Knights beat Colgate 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Cheel Arena.

Clarkson improves its record to 18-4-4 overall with a 12-1-1 ECAC Hockey record while Colgate falls to 16-7-3 overall and 7-6-1 in conference.

"I thought today was a good bounce back game against a strong Colgate team," said Head Coach Matt Desrosier.  "We had to overcome some early penalties, but I thought we handled it well and didn't let it rattle us. We were able to put some good pressure on them forcing their goalie to make some quality saves while also playing hard defensively. Overall we are pretty happy with the team's effort and will look to continue to build off it moving forward."

Clarkson took the lead 13:32 into the first period. During a power-play, Clarkson worked the puck around the Colgate net. Co-captain Savannah Harmon (Sophomore/Downers Grove, IL) slid a pass to assistant captain Genevieve Bannon (Senior/Candiac, QUE) who passed to Mercer in the crease. Mercer's one-time shot was initially stopped by Colgate's goaltender, but it slipped out of her grasp and the momentum of the shot carried the puck over the goal line. The goal represented the 151st point of Mercer's career, putting her in sole possession of second all-time in Clarkson history with one ore point than older sister Carly Mercer '14.

Colgate tied the score with just 16 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Cat Quirion lined up a shot from the top of the right circle, but a Clarkson skater blocked it. Unfortunately, the deflection fell right to Olivia Zafuto in the left circle and her slap shot flew into the top corner of the goal.

Clarkson had a golden chance to retake the lead in the second period when the Golden Knights were awarded a penalty shot. It was the first penalty shot in a Clarkson game since New Hampshire scored one on October 19th, 2008. Bannon stepped up to take the try and was unable to convert.

However, Clarkson did take the lead for good just 2:48 into the third period. Bannon stole the puck in Clarkson's defensive zone and raced down the left side. She stopped deep in the Colgate end and allowed a Raider skater to fly past before centering the puck. Mercer was there to meet the pass and finished the move with a shot that scored. The goal stood as the game-winner with Clarkson shutting down the Colgate offense for the final 17 minutes.

Clarkson finished with a 37-27 advantage in shots. The Golden Knights were 1-6 on the power-play and killed all five Colgate extra man opportunities. Shea Tiley (Junior/Owen Sound, ONT) finished with 26 saves for Clarkson while Julia Vandyk had 35 stops for Colgate.

Clarkson will hit the road next weekend, travelling to Union and Rensselaer.
