ECAC Men's Hockey North Country Rivalry Resumes In Canton Friday

One game remains for the Clarkson University Hockey team before a lengthy break. And it's a big one. The Golden Knights, guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, travel 10 miles down Route 11 on Friday to take on archrival St. Lawrence University for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff at Appleton Arena in Canton, NY.

Along with all the regular hype surrounding one of college sports greatest rivalries is the additional focus on former Clarkson head coach Mark Morris facing the Knights for the first time as a head coach for another program, which happens to be the Green and Gold fiercest adversary. Morris, the all-time winningest coach in Clarkson history, guided the Knights to 306 victories over 15 seasons (1988-2002), including 25 wins against St. Lawrence.

The Knights saw an eight-game unbeaten stretch (6-0-2) come to a close on Saturday as 8th-ranked Harvard skated past the Green and Gold 7-3 at Cheel Arena. Clarkson started out strong against the Crimson and held a 2-1 first-period lead before Harvard outscored the Knights 6-1 over the final two periods. Harvard's last two goals were empty-net, shorthanded tallies during the final minutes of play to seal Clarkson's first loss since November 4.

On Friday, Clarkson defeated Dartmouth 4-2 behind strong specialty teams play, going 2-4 on the power play and killing off all four of the Big Green man-advantage opportunities. 

Clarkson stands at 9-6-3 overall and posts a 5-2-1, fourth-place ECAC Hockey mark.

•    In the overall series between the North Country rivals, which began in the 1925-26 campaign, the Golden Knights hold an overwhelming 122-70-11 lead. The rivalry has been fairly even recently with St. Lawrence holding a 5-4-1 edge in the last 10 games, but the Saints have gone 4-1 in the past five meetings. St. Lawrence won three of the four encounters last season including both ECAC Hockey quarterfinal games in March at Appleton Arena, both by 3-2 scores in overtime.
•    The Knights go on a 20-day break for exams and the Christmas Holiday after the St. Lawrence game. Clarkson returns to action on Friday, December 30 at Hockey East foe Northeastern in Boston. Clarkson will face off against Rensselaer in a non-conference outing in Lake Placid to open the New year on January 7.  Starting with Friday's game at St. Lawrence, the Green and Gold will play the seven straight away from Cheel before returning to their home ice to host Union on Friday, January 27.
•    Clarkson is undefeated away from Potsdam, going 5-0-1 in road games and a 0-0-1 in a neutral site contest. The Knights have outscored opponents on their home ice 20-11. Clarkson is 4-6-1 at Cheel. 
• Senior Troy Josephs has come on strong recently with seven goals and three assists over the past nine games.  He tallied three of the Knights' seven goals over the weekend, including his second two-goal outing of the season with a pair of scores in Friday's win over Dartmouth. Josephs has 13 points (8-5) in 17 games this season. 
• Senior Jordan Boucher paces the Clarkson offense with 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists. He tallied a pair of assists in both games over the weekend. Boucher leads all current Knights in career scoring with 59 points (24-35) through 95 games. 
• Junior Sam Vigneault broke out of a six-game stretch with out a point, recording a goal and two assists over the weekend. He is tied for third on the Knights' in points with 13 (4-9).
• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 15 of Clarkson's first 18 games and posts a .918 save percentage and a 2.53 goals against average along with two shutouts. He has gone 5-1-2 in his last eight starts after missing weekend action on November 4-5 with an illness. Kielly was named Most Outstanding Player of the Shillelagh Tournament. (11/26). Kielly was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November.
• Clarkson's Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is tied for second overall in the NCAA, averaging 2.94 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters have accounted for 35% of Clarkson's offense with 53 points on 18 goals and 35 assists. 
• Freshman Devin Brosseau is second on the Green and Gold offensively with 15 points. He tallied the opening goal, his fifth score of the season, in Friday's win over Dartmouth. He posts a team-high plus/minus at +8. Brosseau was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for October.
• Rookie Sheldon Rempal (5-8) is tied for third in Clarkson scoring along with Josephs and Vigneault. He has recorded five goals and eight assists.
•  Freshman Nico Sturm follows right behind with 12 points (3-9).  
• The Freshman Line centered by Sturm (3-7), left wing Brosseau (5-6) and right wing Rempal (5-7) has accounted for 13 goals and 20 assists over the past 14 games since skating together starting with the game at Providence (10/21).
• James de Haas leads the Knights in scoring from the blueline with nine points on three goals and six assists. 
• After missing the first nine games of the season nursing an injury defenseman Terrance Amorosa has made a big impact on the Knights' blueline as the Green and Gold have gone 6-1-2 with the junior back in the lineup. He has tallied a power-play goal and three assists through nine games and posts a +2 plus/minus rating.  
• The Knights have scored the opening goal in 12 of the first 18 games, going 7-3-2 when they score first. Clarkson has scored the opening goal in each of the past eight games.
• Clarkson is 10th in the country in penalty minutes, averaging 17.2 minutes per game. The Knights' penalty kill is rated 19th in the nation at 84.7% (100-118). 
• The Knights' power-play is 37th in Division I at 16.9% (15-89). Clarkson was 2-of-7 over the weekend with both goals coming against Dartmouth. Clarkson is 6-3-2 when it scores on the power play and 3-3-1 when it does not.
•    Clarkson is tied for 20th in the PairWise Rankins (12/5).
• In its 95th season, Clarkson boasts 71 winning campaigns and a 1,404-841-152 all-time record for a .618 winning % since 1920-21.

•    Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170),  Terrance Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Troy Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189).

Scouting St. Lawrence:
St. Lawrence, with Mark Morris at the helm, is ranked 19th in the latest USCHO.com national poll with a 9-5-4 overall record. The Saints stand in first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-1-2 league mark. St. Lawrence has gone 6-4-1 in its last 11 games. The Saints picked up their first victory in their last four games with a 5-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday at Appleton Arena. On Friday. St. Lawrence suffered its first loss since late October with a 4-2 setback against Harvard. St. Lawrence is 7-2-1 at home this year with its only other loss at Appleton Arena coming on October 28 against Wisconsin (5-2). Gavin Bayreuther, the nation's second-leading scorer from the blueline, paces the Saints' offense with 22 points on six goals and 16 assists. Mike Marnell has a team-high 10 goals to go along with nine assists. Kyle Hayton, one of the top goaltenders in the country, owns a .932 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average along with three shutouts. 

The Series:

The teams split during the regular season with St. Lawrence posting a 3-0 shutout in Canton on November 13 and Green and Gold skating to a 3-1 victory in Potsdam on January 12. The Saints' November win snapped Clarkson's five-game unbeaten stretch at Appleton Arena.

James de Haas leads the Green and Gold in scoring against the Saints with four points, including three assists through 10 games of the rivalry. Sam Vigneault has tallied a team-high two goals in the series. 
In 284 minutes of action in the rivalry, Steve Perry is 2-2-1 with a .914 save percentage and a 1.90 GAA.
