Clarkson Holds Hockey Awards Banquet

Golden Knight seniors Joe Zarbo and James Howden
The 2014-15 Clarkson University Hockey team was recognized at the annual Knight Club Booster Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 18. Family, friends, and booster club members paid tribute to the Golden Knights and honored the two seniors in the Class of 2015.

The Golden Knights' Class of 2015 — James Howden and Joe Zarbo — helped Clarkson compile 58 victories during their four-year careers and played in three ECAC Hockey playoff series at Cheel Arena.

Nine awards were announced at the banquet. Headlining the list of recipients was Jeff DiNallo, who was named the recipient of the Bill Harrison Clarkson Most Valuable Player in honor of the successful Clarkson coach of the late 1940s and 1950s.

DiNallo paced the Clarkson offense with 21 points on six goals and a team-high 15 assists through 34 games. The 5-7, 160-pound junior forward posted his best outing with a career-high four points on two goals and two assists in the 5-2 win over Rensselaer at Cheel on February 7. He also opened the scoring in the Knights' 5-0 win over the Engineers in the ECAC Hockey playoffs and also tallied one power-play marker. A native of Aurora, ONT, DiNallo served as an assistant captain for the Green and Gold this past season. He has 50 career points (19-31) through 90 games.

Pat Megannety was honored with the Mike Morrison Dedication Award for teamwork, hustle and dedication. The award was named in honor of the former Clarkson captain who died in a work accident on July 27, 1988. A junior forward from Oakville, ONT, Megannety played in 34 games recording six goals and seven assists along with posting a +4 plus/minus rating. He also tallied Clarkson's lone shorthanded goal of the season, at Harvard on January 16

Simon Bessette was presented with the Clarkson Ironman Award. The award represents the player, who in spite of being bruised, broken, spliced or otherwise hurt, most demonstrated the will and determination to overcome injuries and contribute to the team. A native of St. Jean, QUE, the junior forward overcame major surgery to skate in 12 games.

Terrance Amorosa was presented with the Richmond Award. Named in honor of loyal Clarkson followers Ernie and Connie Richmond, the Richmond award is presented to a Golden Knight who has shown improvement in his playing ability and displayed team leadership. A freshman defenseman from Kirkland, QUE, Amorosa made significant strides during his rookie campaign and made an impact on Clarkson's veteran defensive corps. He skated in 18 games, including the final 10 contests and recorded five points (1-4) and a +2 rating. His first collegiate goal came at Princeton on February 13. He also tallied two assists in the playoffs.

Paul Geiger was honored with the Fran Neragin Award. Named in honor of the loyal Clarkson hockey booster who passed away in 1984, the Neragin award is presented to a player who displays unselfish play and sportsmanship both on and off the ice. The Knights' captain, Geiger was just one of two players to skate in all 37 games. The junior defenseman from Stouffville, ONT played a leading role in Clarkson's stingy effort on the blueline and contributed nine points (1-8) offensively. He scored the game-winning goal and tallied an assist in the 2-1 victory at Brown on November 8.

Kelly Summers was selected as the Knights' Rookie of the Year. A native of Golden Lake, ONT, Summers made a big impression on the Clarkson blueline and was a top performer on the power play. He recorded 10 points, including six goals and led the Green and Gold with five power-play markers. Summers scored the game-winning goal and added two assists in Clarkson's 5-2 over Rensselaer on February 7. He was also named to the ECAC Hockey all-rookie team.

Howden, a native of Edgeley, SASK was named Clarkson's Best Defensive Player. Howden put in a steady effort on the Clarkson blueline skating in 35 games and posted a +4 plus/minus rating. An assistant captain, He scored three goals and five assists. Howden scored the tying goal and added one assist in the 3-3 draw at Rensselaer on February 27, which clinched a home-ice berth in the ECAC Hockey playoffs for the Knights.

Howden was also honored as Clarkson's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An exceptional student-athlete who competed at a high level for the Golden Knights while studying in the University's rigorous curriculum of Financial Information and Analysis, the four-year veteran compiled a 3.65 grade point average. He was also a nominee for ECAC Hockey's Student-Athlete of the Year award.
