Clarkson Falls to St. Lawrence in Men's Hockey

The five-game unbeaten streak for the Clarkson University Hockey team at Appleton Arena came to a close on Friday night as St. Lawrence shut out the Golden Knights 3-0 in ECAC Hockey action in Canton.

Ranked 19th in the country entering the game, Clarkson stands at 5-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference. The Knights play at Quinnipiac and Princeton next weekend.

Postgame audio from Head Coach Casey Jones.

St. Lawrence (7-3-1, 2-1-0), which is ranked 15th in the nation, broke open a tight game with two third-period goals to gain its first win on its home ice over the Knights since March 7, 2010, and the victory in the 200th meeting all-time between the North Country rivals. The Green and Gold lead the series 121-68-11.

Both teams were held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes with the Knights outshooting St. Lawrence 15-6. Sophomore goaltender Steve Perry made a couple of big stops, denying Matt Purmal on a shot in front five minutes in and turning aside a power-play shot at the side of the net from Mike Marnell with seven minutes remaining in the stanza.

Clarkson was 0-of-2 on the power play in the period, including a lengthy 5-on-3 advantage. The Saints were 0-of-1.

St. Lawrence took the lead at 11:03 of the middle frame when a shot from the top of the left circle by the Saints' leading scorer, defenseman Gavin Bayreuther found its way through traffic in front and past Perry.

The Knights, who were outshot in the second stanza, 10-7, killed off all three St. Lawrence power plays in the period to keep it a one-goal deficit through 40 minutes.

St. Lawrence capitalized on a bounce early in the third to make it 2-0. Joe Sullivan picked up a bouncing puck in the slot after Nolan Gluchowski' shot deflected off a Clarkson defenseman in front and fired in a quick shot at 3:48.

The Knights went on the power play after a 20-minute delay after the glass broke on a boarding penalty by the Saints at 13:33, but could not convert

The Saints sealed the win with a goal by Eric Sweetman at 11:52.

Clarkson outshot it North Country rival 32-22. Perry finished with 19 saves. Kyle Hayton made 32 stops for the Saints. Both teams were 0-of-4 on the power play.
