Matt Zarbo Named ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. Clarkson University Hockey’s Matt Zarbo has been honored as ECAC Hockey’s Student-Athlete of the Year in 2012-13. The prestigious award was presented to the junior forward at the reception held on the eve of the ECAC Hockey Championship semifinals at Boardwalk Hall on Thursday evening.

Zarbo is an exceptional student-athlete who competes at a high level for the Golden Knights while studying in the University’s rigorous curriculum of Civil Engineering.

In his five semesters at Clarkson, Zarbo has compiled a 3.923 grade point average. A versatile forward who played on all four lines, the Grand Island, NY native skated in 33 games overall and recorded three goals and six assists. He set up a career-high three goals in Clarkson’s 5-1 win at Harvard on January 25. 

"Matt is the consummate student-athlete who has compiled an outstanding GPA in one of the most rigorous fields of study the University offers," stated head coach Casey Jones. "His ability to excel in his academic pursuit while balancing the demands of a Division I schedule is impressive. He sets an example for his peers as well as the young players on our team on what it means to be a successful student-athlete. Matt is a fantastic representative of the Golden Knights hockey program on campus and in the community. He is respected by his professors, teammates, and coaches for the steady manner in which he pursues his goals. The ECAC is widely recognized as a league that attracts the true student-athlete. Matt personifies what our league and institutions represent. He is an outstanding recipient of this prestigious award. This is a fantastic accomplishment for Matt, our program and the University." 

Zarbo is also involved in volunteering in the community through reading programs at local elementary schools, assisting with minor hockey teams and ringing bells for Salvation Army. He is very mature, possesses great communication skills with all age groups and is extremely diligent in handling any situation.
