Despite a 34-to-19 advantage in shots, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team could not capitalize on its chances and suffered it first ever loss to Union, falling to the Dutchwomen 2-1 in ECAC Hockey action at Messa Rink in Schenectady on Friday night.

The Golden Knights, who are now winless in their last three games (0-2-1), fall to 4-3-4 overall and to 0-2-1 in the conference. Clarkson will look to get back on the winning track when it plays at Rensselaer in a 4:00 p.m. game on Saturday in Troy. The Dutchwomen improve to 3-7 overall and to 1-3 in ECAC Hockey.

After a scoreless first period, Union went on top 2-0 in the second. Nicole Bartlett scored her first of the year at 6:18 and Emilie Arseneault tallied a shorthanded marker at 17:07 to give the Dutchwomen a two-goal lead through 40 minutes.

Clarkson overwhelmed Union in the final 20 minutes with a 17-3 advantage in shots, but could not get the goals it needed.

With regulation time winding down, the Knights pulled sophomore goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) for the extra attacker and the moved paid off when classmate Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) scored her team-high sixth goal of the season unassisted with 23 seconds remaining in the third period.

Time ran out for Clarkson, however, as the Green and Gold lost their first loss ever to Union after 16 straight wins over the Dutchwomen.

Howe finished with 17 saves, while Union’s Kate Gallagher posted 33 stops in her first action of the season.

Both teams were 0-of-4 on the power play.
