Coming off its best results on the road this season, with a three-point weekend in ECAC Hockey action, the Clarkson University Hockey team will return to Boston this Friday with a non-league game against traditional national powerhouse, Boston College of Hockey East. The Golden Knights and Eagles will faceoff at 5:00 pm at Kelly Rink in Chestnut Hill.

Guided by seventh-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Jean-Francois Houle, the Green and Gold stand at 4-8-1 overall and are in 10th-place in ECAC Hockey with a 1-4-1 league mark.

The Knights put an end to a lengthy losing skid with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory at Dartmouth on Friday, and then overcame a lackluster effort at Harvard with a pair of late goals to gain a 2-2 tie on Saturday.

Sophomore goaltender Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) was the difference maker in Clarkson’s three-point weekend. He was in top form, keeping the Knights in both games, despite being outplayed on the road. Karpowich was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for his efforts. He combined for 76 saves in the two games, finishing with a .951 save percentage and allowed just two even-strength goals. He posted 35 stops at Dartmouth, including 14 saves in the third period as Clarkson won its first road game of the season and first league game. The following night at Harvard, he turned in a 41-save effort, including 27 stops through the first 40 minutes, to keep Clarkson close before the Knights rallied with two late scores. Karpowich was named First Star in both games.

Clarkson’s top defensive-defenseman, Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ONT) was asked to play a more offensive role to help the Knights’ production up front and the move paid off as he accounted for three points over the weekend. He scored his third goal of the season for the game-winner at Dartmouth to cap off a third-period rally, snapping a six-game losing streak. At Harvard, he set up both Clarkson goals with less than four minutes to play in the third with the primary assist on both scores.

Sophomore Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT), junior assistant captain Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT), junior defenseman Bryan Rufenach (Cameron, ONT) and senior assistant captain Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) also scored over the weekend to help the Golden Knights post their best weekend on the road since sweeping Brown and Yale on January 16-17 of last season.

Guided by former Clarkson head coach Jerry York, Boston College is once again ranked among the top teams in the country and is at the top of Hockey East with a 5-3-2 overall record and a 4-3-2 conference mark, good for a tie for first place in their league.

The Eagles are also coming off a three-point weekend in league play on the road. Boston College skated to a 4-3 win over Maine in Orono on Friday and battled to a 3-3 draw with the Bears on Saturday. After Friday’s game against Clarkson, the Eagles begin a six-game road trip before playing rival Boston University at Fenway Park on January 8. York, who guided the Knights for seven seasons (1972-79), led Boston College to the 2008 NCAA Championship title.

York also coached at Bowling Green State University and guided the Falcons, with George Roll as a standout junior forward on the team, to the 1984 National Championship crown.

Quotes From the Coach:
"Anytime you come away with three out of four points on the road you have to be happy," stated George Roll about the Knights’ weekend in New England. "We played a solid hockey game on Friday and Paul (Karpowich) made some big saves. We were not very good for two periods at Harvard, and again Paul kept us in the game enabling us to get the tie. We have played better in games we have lost than we did this past weekend. There is a fine line between winning and losing."

On Karpowich, Roll remarked, "Paul had his best weekend of the season. The big thing for him was that he was aggressive and confident in the crease. He was at his best. He was the difference in us getting three points instead of coming up empty."

The Series:
Of all the present teams in the NCAA, Clarkson holds its longest current winning streak over Boston College having won 10 straight. In the all-time series, which began with a 5-1 Clarkson win on January 23, 1936, the Golden Knights hold over a 2-to-1 advantage, leading 44-21. In their last meeting, Clarkson defeated the Eagles 2-1 in Potsdam on January 5, 2008. Boston College’s last victory over the Green and Gold was an 8-5 triumph in Chestnut Hill, MA on January 21, 1991. The Knights are 4-1 at Kelley Rink in Conte Forum with their lone loss coming in the team’s first meeting at BC’s new rink in January 1991. In their last visit to Chestnut Hill, the Knights defeated the Eagles 4-3 on November 29, 1997. Former Clarkson coach Jerry York, is 4-11 against the Knights, with a 0-7 mark while coach at BC, and a 4-4 record while coach at Bowling Green (1979-94). George Roll, a former player for York at BGSU, is 1-0 against York and Boston College.
