A bid to upset the 19th-ranked team in the nation came up just short for the Clarkson University Men’s Soccer team as the Golden Knights fell to Liberty League rival Hobart College 3-2 in overtime at Clarkson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson twice overcame one-goal deficits to the Statesmen to force the extra session, but Hobart (9-1-2, 3-1-0) was able to come away with the win when sophomore Evan Grey (Ballston Spa, NY) converted off a direct kick during a scramble in the box with just 1:46 remaining in the second 10-minute sudden victory overtime period. Classmate Andrew Steates (New Hartford, NY) earned the assist on the deciding goal.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Clarkson and Hobart traded two goals apiece in the second half. The Statesmen’s Will Abbott (Irvington, NY) started the scoring when he beat the Knights’ freshman goaltender Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) to the ball just outside the Clarkson box and scored on a long shot in the 50th minute.
At 66:59, sophomore Tobin Boomer (Louisville, KY) tied the game knocking in a rebound off classmates’ Elliott Carter’s shot for his first goal of the season.
Hobart regained the lead in the 74th minutes off a header in the box by Chris King.
Once again, the Green and Gold battled back, knotting the game at 2-2. Senior Phil Boyd (Groveland, MA) answered back at 80:19, connecting on a header in the box with sophomore Nate Hazen (Dalton, MA) assisting.
Clarkson out shot Hobart 20-17 and held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Spagnolo finished with five saves, while the Statesmen’s Charlie Hale (Winchester, MA) posted six stops.
The Knights, at 5-6-1 overall and 0-4-0 in conference action, will try and break out of a four-game losing skid when they host Cazenovia College on October 17 in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
