Roth, Kenzie

Plattsburgh, NY – For the first 85 minutes, Kenzie Roth made sure the game stayed scoreless for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, and with five minutes to go Riley Irvin scored the game-winner to lift the Golden Knights to a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1-0 with their third straight win and next will head to SUNY New Paltz on Saturday. Plattsburgh State suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 2-1-1.

The play was fairly even throughout the first half, with the majority of scoring chances coming from too far out to cause major concern. Kate Walsh had the first opportunity only five-plus minutes of the game, but her shot was from about 20 yards out and didn't have enough pace to truly challenge Plattsburgh keeper Desiree Dubois. Plattsburgh had a run of shots over the next 10 minutes, but all were well wide. In the 28th minute, Thea Armistead had a shot on the Plattsburgh frame with a decent amount of pace, but again it was from far enough out to keep Dubois from moving too far to make a stop. Plattsburgh's first shot on goal came only 30 seconds after Armistead's, but the Cardinals' opportunity, too, had little pace as Kenzie Roth easily scooped up the ball with no pressure from any other Cardinals.

In the second half, Clarkson had the first solid scoring chance off a corner as Callie Abel tried to volley a corner kick past Dubois in the 59th minute. Kenzie Roth then made three saves in a five-minute stretch, including a diving stop shortly after a corner from Sydney Myers. Dubois was not to be outdone, making a sprawling save near the post to deny Gabrielle Cyganik's hard shot from just inside the penalty area in the 70th minute.

Perhaps the best scoring chance of the game came off the left foot of Emily LeBlanc. The shot from about 20 yards out seemed somewhat innocuous as it was roughly shoulder high for Dubois, but a misplay on the slick ball almost saw it roll in only to see the Plattsburgh goalie smother it short of the goal line at 72:30.

Roth continued to put on a stellar display, making a handful of saves late to keep the game scoreless, setting up the game-winner from Riley Irvin with just over five minutes to go. The play was set up when Ella Intrieri was pushed from behind and off the ball just outside the penalty area. From around 22-24 yards out, Riley Irvin was able to curve a shot around the wall of Plattsburgh defenders standing near the penalty stripe and snuck her shot past Dubois at 85:27.

Plattsburgh outshot Clarkson 13-8, though the shots on goal were closer at 7-6 in favor of the home team. Kenzie Roth finished with seven saves for her second straight shutout, while Desiree Dubois had five stops for the Cardinals.
