Fitzpatrick Earns Win and Save in Doubleheader Sweep of Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY – Devin Fitzpatrick came within an out of a perfect game in the opener and then reemerged in the sixth inning of game two to earn a save as the Clarkson University Softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep against Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, winning the first 1-0 and game two 7-3 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 16-11 on the year and have now won seven of eight in the past 10 days. Plattsburgh dropped to 5-14 on the year. Clarkson looks to maintain its momentum heading into the conference weekend where the team will face Ithaca College on Friday and Union College on Saturday.

Clarkson got on the board early in game one as Elissa Uveino and Zoey Kovach delivered back-to-back one-out hits. Two batters later Lexi Rydelek drilled a double to left-center to plate Uveino in what proved to be the game's only run.

Fitzpatrick mowed through the Plattsburgh lineup with only three balls making it to the outfield in the first six innings of the contest. Cadey Wheat was nearly as good but got some help from her defense as Plattsburgh wiggled out of jams on a couple of occasions with runners in scoring position. It wasn't until the top of the seventh, with two outs, that Plattsburgh finally got a runner, when Sarah Isaacs singled to right. Even that turned out to be a close play since the ball was sharply hit and Bridget Kerwin nearly threw out Isaacs at first. It mattered little, however, as Fitzpatrick quickly dispatched Megan Pillus to end the game.

Kovach and Rydelek each had a pair of hits in the game, while Fitzpatrick struck out six over seven innings for her ninth win of the year. Cadey Wheat took the loss, allowing six hits and one walk over six frames.

Game two opened similarly to the first as Kovach doubled in Isabel Haspil to give Clarkson an early 1-0 lead. Both starting pitchers showed bouts of wildness as the conditions were tough in the first few innings thanks to inconsistent swirling winds and some light rain, but neither could push any more runs across until the fourth.

Plattsburgh tied the game in the top of the fourth with three straight hits. Sara Isaacs singled through the left side and Pillus followed with a hit to nearly the same spot. Bella Toleman followed with a double just inside the bag, sending Isaacs around to score. An inning later, the Cardinals pushed two more across, again starting with two straight hits. A sac bunt put runners on second and third and Isaacs lifted a fly to left to send Mikayla Pappas home. When the throw got away, Gwen Noll was able to race home as well, giving Plattsburgh a 3-1 lead.

Clarkson responded with three in the bottom of the fifth. Fitzpatrick opened with a double and came around on a two-out single by Emily Bulone, which fell out of the centerfielder's glove on a diving attempt. Bridget Kerwin walked, and a dropped foul ball gave Clarkson more life when Emma Sabourin made the Cardinals pay for the miscue as she doubled to left-center to plate both runners.

In the sixth, Plattsburgh loaded the bases, first with a pair of hits to put runners on second and third and then on a fielder's choice when Fitzpatrick tried to get the runner sneaking off of third on a bunt. Fitzpatrick then induced a ground ball to third, which Elizabeth Greco was able to snag, touch the bag, and then throw across the diamond to complete the double play. The Knights picked up some insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. The first came on a Zoey Kovach double to left-center, and then Kovach scored on a double from Elizabeth Greco. Emily Bulone ripped a double to center to plate Greco, giving Clarkson a 7-3 lead.

Kovach, Greco, and Bulone each recorded a pair of hits, with Kovach, Bulone, and Sabourin each driving in two for the Knights. Bella Hotchkiss received a no-decision after four innings of work in which she allowed three hits and an earned run, while Amanda Corrice picked up the win in 1.1 innings of work, her fifth victory of the year. Fitzpatrick got the final five outs of the game for her third save of the year.

Carly Gemmett worked 5.1 innings for Plattsburgh, but suffered the loss, striking out five against five walks while allowing 10 hits. Offensively, Megan Pillus, Bella Toleman, and Mikayla Pappas each had two hits for the Cardinals.
