Knights Fall in First Doubleheader in Florida

Clermont, FL – The first day of the spring trip saw the Clarkson University Softball team's bats relatively silent with just four hits over 13 innings as the Golden Knights dropped an 8-0 decision to Babson over five innings along with a 3-2 loss in extras against Plymouth State.

In the opener, Clarkson was without a baserunner until midway through the game when the Knights reached base on a walk, but that was all the Green and Gold could muster as the team was held without a hit in five innings while collecting three walks.

Babson had one big inning to put the contest out of reach for Clarkson. The Beavers scored once on an RBI ground out in the first and a Sophia Pak singled made it 2-0 in the second. In the third, Devin McCall knocked a bases loaded single for one run and Pak followed with an infield single for another. The big blow came on a two-run double by Emily Walsh that made it 6-0. The Beavers then tacked on two runs in the fifth, both unearned on a fielder's choice, that made it 8-0.

Cameron Whitehead tossed five hitless innings, striking out 11 and walking three for Babson. For Clarkson, Devin Fitzpatrick struck out four in her five frames.

In the second game of the day, it took an extra inning to decide the contest. Clarkson opened the scoring in the first thanks to a bases loaded looper to left-center by Elizabeth Greco, but the Panthers got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Kenzie Bessette reached on a bunt single, stole second and third, and then came around on Avery Couch's single. Clarkson scored in the second when Lexi Rydelek put herself in scoring position with a one-out triple, later coming around on a single from Isabel Haspil. Plymouth State tied the game in the fourth when Kiera Larson forced home a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Both teams remained scoreless through the next three innings, extending the game to extras where in Florida baserunners are immediately put on second to try to keep game times tight. In the top half of the eighth, a sacrifice bunt pushed Clarkson's runner to third, but the Knights could not cash in with runners on second and third with one out as the Plymouth pitching staff eliminated the threat with a ground out and fly out. In the bottom of the eighth, Jade Guertin singled home Mia Ly to end the contest.
