Knights Drop Pair to New Paltz and Springfield

Clermont, FL – Although the offense woke up a little bit from its early season slump, the runs put across by the Clarkson University Softball team were not enough to keep up with its opponents as the Golden Knights fell to SUNY New Paltz 4-2 and then to Springfield College 9-4 on Sunday.

In the opener against the Hawks, New Paltz picked up a run in the first on a sacrifice fly and then another the same way in the third inning, but in the bottom half of the third Clarkson rallied back to tie the game. Senior Zoey Kovach single home classmate Elissa Uveino to make it 2-1 and then Isabel Haspil delivered a bases loaded single to knot the game up at 2-2.

The score remained the same until the seventh when the Hawks picked up two runs in the top half of the frame. Maddie Anderson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt, but it mattered little since Sophia D'Arcangelis followed with a triple and then scored on the Hawks' third sac fly of the game.

Both Kovach and Uveino had two hits in the first game, with Uveino doubling and also stealing a base.

In game two Clarkson's offense really got rolling with a season-best nine hits as well as scoring twice in the top of the first inning. All of that scoring came with two outs when Zoey Kovach extended the frame with a seemingly harmless single. However, Lexi Rydelek walked and Haspil singled to load the bases, and then back-to-back walks from Elizabeth Greco and Genevieve Mucitelli pushed runs across to make it 2-0.

Unfortunately that was the last that the Knights would lead in the contest since Springfield scored five times in the bottom half of the frame. The first run came around on a Callie Gendron single and then three more rounded the base following a Lucy Puskas three-run shot. Springfield then got what proved to be the game-winning RBI on a hit from Kate Katsetos.

Springfield added a run in the third when Puskas scored on an RBI groundout, but Clarkson got the run back in the top of the fourth on a Elissa Uveino single that drove home Devin Fitzpatrick, putting the score at 6-3. Springfield added three more runs, two of them unearned in the next couple of innings to put the tally at 9-3, ahead of the Knights picking up a run on a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Greco in the top of the seventh, but Clarkson left the bases loaded to end the contest.

Game two had three Clarkson players with multiple hits, Kovach repeating her game one performance with two hits. Elizabeth Greco drove in two and also reached on a walk while going 2-for-2, and Fitzpatrick also had two hits in two at bats.
