Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Quinnipiac Strong Start Sends Knights to 4-1 Defeat

Hamden, CT – Shane Soderwall made 30 stops for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, but it was not enough as ninth-ranked Quinnipiac netted two first-period goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Golden Knights on Friday night.

The Green and Gold fell to 4-9-0 on the year and 1-4-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while Quinnipiac jumped to 8-3-2 and 2-1-0. Clarkson looks to get back on the winning track against Princeton on Saturday.

Soderwall made some impressive saves in the early going for the Knights, drawing some applause from the Clarkson fans that made the trip to Southern Connecticut. However, Chris Pelosi was able to solve the transfer netminder twice in second half of the opening period. The first goal came when Quinnipiac stole the puck in the neutral zone and quickly put the puck back in the Clarkson defensive zone. Andon Cerbone skated around the back of the net and waited for Pelosi to fill the spot in the slot, sending a pass in front for a one-timer at 10:55.

A little over five minutes later, the Bobcats scored on the power play almost immediately after the draw from the left circle. William Gibson dropped the puck back after the faceoff win for a shot from Ethan Wyttenbach at the top of the slot. Pelosi was on the doorstep of the crease and redirected the puck only to have Soderwall make a save. However, Pelosi's second attempt off that rebound found the back of the net at 16:38.

Quinnipiac scored a third goal midway through the second period when Braden Blace was able to keep the puck in the zone at the right point. Blace quickly turned and sent a wrist shot close to the Clarkson goal, allowing Markus Vidicek to finish off the play with a redirect near the right post at 9:30, putting the score at 3-0.

In the second half of the middle stanza, the two teams began to go up and down the ice, trading chances. Soderwall again showed off his raw ability, turning aside a shot on 2-on-1 and then another attempt at the left post in the final five minutes of the period.

Play got somewhat chippy in the third period with four penalties whistled in a stretch of five seconds, creating a 4-on-4. Roughly 90 seconds into the stretch of wide-open skating with two fewer players on the ice, Clarkson finally broke through. Erik Bargholtz started the play by causing a turnover and creating a rush in the other direction. Luka Sukovic had the puck deep in the Quinnipiac zone, but turned on a dime and rifled a cross ice pass through the slot all the way to the right dot, finding Matthew Mayich for the one-timer at 8:34, his second goal of the season.

Late in the game, Clarkson pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker, and then went up two skaters when Quinnipiac was called for a penalty. The Knights possessed the puck for a full minute in the Quinnipiac defensive zone and had some close opportunities at the Bobcats' goal, only to see the home team pick up an empty net score. Pelosi whipped a shot down ice that went just wide, but since Quinnipiac was on the penalty kill there was no icing, allowing Pelosi to follow up his shot when the puck bounced off the boards in front of the Clarkson goal at 19:01.

Clarkson outshot Quinnipiac in terms of total attempts at 57-54, but the Bobcats outpaced the Knights 34-23 when it came to shots on goal. Soderwall finished with 30 saves for Clarkson and Matej Marinov had 22 stops for the Bobcats.
