CU Men's Soccer Preview - vs. Brockport/Castleton (9/6-7)

Well rested after its first game of the season, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team is back at home this weekend when the team takes on Brockport in non-league action at Hantz Field, but the team will hit the road the next day as they will face Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday afternoon.

The Series: The Clarkson and Brockport have faced one another just five times previously, and three of those games took place during the Eisenhower administration when the Golden Knights' Men's Soccer program had just dawned. Clarkson has won once, picking up a victory in 2016, while Brockport came away with a win in the last meeting, a 5-1 decision in 2019. The Golden Knights are 2-0 against Castleton, winning by scores of 2-0 in both 2017 and 2018. 

Key Stats for Clarkson (1-0-0): Junior goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup picked up his eighth career shutout last Friday and was rewarded with Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week honors thanks to his three saves against St. John Fisher. Zach Shufelt had the game-winner, scoring in the 77th minute, and making an impact despite playing for just 21 minutes in the season-opener.

Key Stats for Brockport (1-0-1): The Golden Eagles have begun the season unbeaten in two games, blanking RIT 1-0 and finishing in a scoreless tie against University of Rochester. Brockport has gone 18-6-12 over the last two seasons, but has fallen just short of the NCAA Tournament in both seasons. Russ Domm scored the game-winner against RIT and he has accumulated 12 goals and 28 points from 2022-2023. Goalkeeper Andrew Taylor has 13 shutouts in the last two years and two so far this season, making seven saves in 180 minutes.

Key Stats for Castleton (2-0-0): The Spartans are halfway to last year's win total through two games thanks to a 2-1 win over Russell Sage and a 2-0 victory against Fitchburg State. Jacques Alfani has provided a spark in his first year with Castleton, scoring two goals in two games off the bench, having played just 62 minutes total. Matt Spiller has also contributed with a goal and an assist through two contests. Xander Berthiaume has seen success between the posts for the Spartans, producing a 0.50 goals againver average and .917 save percentage.
