Knights Break Out with Four Goals in Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – All season long the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team has been lauded for its defense, but on Tuesday it was the offense that showed up as the Golden Knights topped their crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam 4-1 at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-1-8 with the victory while SUNY Potsdam fell to 6-9-3. Clarkson closes out the regular season on the road against Union College, a game full of playoff implications as the Liberty League season winds down.

Shots on target were few and far between in the first half, but Clarkson made the most of its first attempt. After a foul was called upon a Potsdam player just outside the penalty area, grad student Eric McKean lined one up for a direct kick less than 25 yards away. McKean chose to use a little finesse on his shot, striking the ball hard but simultaneously making sure it was between the posts, going to his top right into the corner to make it 1-0 at 10:34.

McKean had another shot that went wide on another direct kick later in the half, as players from both teams just missed either redirecting or clearing the ball. The Bears had two shots on goal in the first half, but one was a lofting shot from 30-plus yards away and the other a header that was easily corralled by Carter Kladstrup.

Just a few minutes into the second half, it was McKean that would convert again to make it 2-0. Clarkson gained possession near the midfield and passed the ball around among the defenders while the team retook its shape, allowing Kyle Otis to find Josh Baraka with a long pass down the right flank. Baraka carried the ball deeper into Potsdam's defensive territory and crossed the ball into the box, where McKean put one past Lucas Schiel with a header at 51:39.

Clarkson nearly had a third goal when a header off a corner just missed over the crossbar with around 20 minutes remaining, and another free kick by Hudson Lewis was barely over the woodwork a few moments later.

Those near misses turned out to be just that, as the Knights would not be denied a third goal. Clarkson passed the ball around in Potsdam's midfield for a bit when Remi Ufheil turned on the speed to get the ball moving forward. Just inside the box two Clarkson players, a Potsdam defender, and the Bears' goalie were converging on Ufheil's pass, but the ball bounded back out to its original passer as Ufheil hit a hard grounder into an empty net at 74:25.

Less than two minutes later the Knights were on the board again. Off a long direct kick from roughly 40 yards away, the ball fell to the foot of Jack Donnelly and the senior sent a short pass to a wide open Lars Stephensson just on the doorstep for a tap in goal from a few yards away at 76:14.

The scoring continued with less than 10 minutes to go, but this time it was the Bears that would change the scoreboard. Following an offside call on Clarkson, Potsdam played the ball to its right side and a long pass through the midfield caught Justin Mossey in a foot race with two Clarkson defenders. Mossey touched it through the two Knights and found himself with a 1-on-1 with Clarkson goalkeeper Josh Morelli. The junior got a piece of Mossey's first try, but the ball kept going towards the Clarkson goal and Mossey continued to race after it, tapping it in at 82:16.

Clarkson finished the game with a 14-10 edge in shots and the attempts on goal for each team ended at 6-6. Corner kicks were also tied at 2-2. Kladstrup finished with two saves in the contests, playing the first 45 minutes, while Morelli stopped three shots in the second half. Sam Allen had one save in the opening half for Potsdam and Schiel ended up with one save for his 45 minutes in the second half.
